Internally wiring a uIEC

I decided to fit my uIEC inside my Vic. I plucked up the courage the other night to strip the computer a dig out my soldering iron. I thought the easiest way to connect it would be to solder the cable for the uIEC to the underside of the IEC connector on the motherboard. This I did and when I checked the connections with a multi-meter everything thing seemed a-okay. Then I switched it on...

The power light for the uIEC comes on and the green light does it's wee on-then-off thing but when I did a LOAD"$",8 all I get is the DEVICE NOT PRESENT error! Why wouldn't this work? Any ideas? Thanks, P

The standard setting for the uIEC is drive 10.

Yeah, I know. I changed it to drive 8 when I first got it though. Just in case something had been reset I tried loading the directory from device 8, 9 & 10. Thanks anyway.

Check your connections once more, you probably swapped some of the signal lines.

on my Brain uIEC v3.0 the wiring is pins 1-7 of the pcb

white - din 2
Green pcb pin 2 to cassette power
Black - din 6 (centre)
Green - din 1
Red - din 4
Yellow - din 5
Cyan

Ah, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!!!!

It's working!! I got the wires the wrong way around - of course! I drew a diagram of the IEC connector with the colour of the wires coming from it and when referring to it later I read it the wrong way round!

I tell you - this has really put me off building me FE3. If I can't even get FIVE wires the right way around what chance do I have with that thing!

I'm sooo relieved!

Just as a follow-on to this wee project I was wondering if it is possible to wire the LED's on the uIEC so that the 'disc access' light would stay on permanently but still go off and on during access time?

You can run the LED output through a 7404 or 7406 inverter IC to do that.

Too cool! Before reading the next bit of my post please excuse me as I've never done anything like this before. This whole idea is more about my imagination taking over from my knowledge...

So, if I understand this, I would take the output of the LED part of the uIEC PCB and wire it to pins 7 & 14 of the 7404 and then wire a LED to any of the Not gates, say pins 1&2. That would do the job?

(It;s OK, everyone starts somewhere)

7 is gnd, so you need to wire that to gnd (pin 1 of the uIEC/SD)
14 is VCC, so that needs to go to +5v
On the uIEC/SD you will see one side of the LED goes to a small square thing on the bottom of the board (a resistor). You want the other side of the LED. Attach a wire to that side, and hook to pin 1 of the 7404. Then, attach the anode (typically the long lead) of an LED to pin 2. Now, one final thing. THe free end of the LED needs to go to a 330 ohm resistor, and the other end of the resistor goes to Ground. Done.

That's manageable - I think! Just a couple of points to clear up if that's okay...

"Pin 14 needs to go to 5v."

Can that be any 5v source such as the cassette port that I'm already drawing power from or back to the 5v line on the uIEC?

A variation on the above question.

Can that be either ground ie/ pin7 on the 7404 or pin 1 on the uIEC?
