...and paste them in Windows Paint without the colours all being screwed up? I'm using the latest Vista build of Paint (6001) and Vice 2.1. I'm pretty sure I worked this out before but I just can't remember how!
As an aside, I have another question if anybody can be bothered answering it! I seem to have 'lost' Paint. I can use the "Open With..." option and open pics that way but I no longer have a Paint icon in my Start menu and I can't find the bloody program on my HDD!!
God, I feel stupid tonight! *runs and hides from all the "Linux is better" anecdotes...*

You can store screenshots in the menu 'Shapshot > Save/stop media file'. There you select either BMP or PNG as file format.
I never actually used the screen grab feature for this, as the aforementioned method really only saves the display of the emulated computer, instead of the whole screen, or the VICE window.
And rest assured, I'm using Vista Ultimate on my notebook. You still find Paint under All Programs > Accessories.
Aside: the OP - now even in the OT section - shows there's really sense introducing an 'Emulators & Cross-developing' section. The poll is still on.
Besides, I'm afraid that Paint is awfully outdated even in the Vista release. I remember its built in converter to GIF does a truly horrible job at selecting an optimized palette. There should be several freeware graphic programs you could use instead which perform much better than Paint unfortunately tends to do.
Paint is mainly an editor for BMP files. It's quite nice it loads 'foreign' image file formats, but any decent freeware viewer like IrfanView can also do the conversion.

I wrote a k-means colour quantizer myselves years ago. In the meantime computing power has increased that much, conversion times do not anymore exceed 1 hour, but are only a matter of seconds now.

Aha! I just presumed that menu was for save states and movies...thanks!

See, that's my problem. I used to have that there and also a quick launch icon but both have mysteriously disappeared...

I totally agree - I made the first response in that very thread.

The thing I like about Paint is that, although a tad crippled, it loads like lightning and doesn't cause me to read a manual just to do 'simple' things. I've tried GIMP, Paint.Net et al but they are all rather bloated from what I want from a paint package...give me back my Deluxe Paint!

An alternative way in windows is to hit Alt-PrintScreen, which will grab a shot of the current window and stick it in the clipboard. You can then paste it into any program that accepts a graphic (including word).
You will get the menus & such though.
Hitting PrintScreen on it's own will screenshot the entire display.
(this works in windows with anything btw, it is not vice specific).
Pedro Lambrini wrote:That's what I've tried to do but the colours always come out strange. Here's an example of the Vic's screen taken this way. I know it must be something to do with clashing palettes or something. I just don't know how to fix it!!
I assume you're pasting it into Paint? Try pasting it into something else, like another graphics editor or Microsoft Word. Or it might have to do with the number of colors you have Windows set to versus the number of colors you have WinVICE set to.
Yes! You were right Saehn, it was the bit depth. I had (somehow) Vice set to 8 bit while, of course, everything else is running in 32 bit colour! i knew it would be a daft thing.
So, problem solved. Thanks for everybody's input.
