Success!!! I have a really big iron magnet that I had tried to clean up my screen with, but just made it worse. I found a post on the Interwebs that talked about how CRTs work a bit, and what the degausser is doing to the mat behind the glass. Turns out if I use the poles of my magnet, I can have a lot more control over the clearing of the false colours. I found one pole worked for the top half of the screen, and the other pole worked on the bottom half.

I spent about 10 minutes today waving the magnet around in front of my 1702 and by golly I got it! Now it's perfect - nice and crisp and smooth proper colour across the whole screen. WHEW!

Take care!

Hurrah! Now you have another profession in degaussing CRTs. ;) Well, those that are still around...

I've still got a manual degaussing coil from when I was heavy into collecting arcade games. Can't seem to find any for sale except a 36" monster one over at happs!.

Works much easier that using a fixed magnet, takes about 5 to 10 seconds to degauss a monitor.
