Your sprite code seems to be very fast. Once ported to CA65? perhaps it should have its own repo along with some basic instructions and a demo program?
I didn't even think the BB sprites through. Occurs to me that there's no more performance after generalizing the code.

There've been questions about the pick of colours. Yes, I wished they'd've been asked on the spot instead.

So here's my two cents:

* black for the background
* white – always good for a mix and most sprites are using it. Most likely the border colour. (Know where your duct tape is. :mrgreen: )
* blue/greeen: should be foreground colours (for the dragons and enemies)
* an auxiliary colour from the upper register does nicely for the walls. Makes the sprites stand out and that's what the original is doing as well.
Walls must not be using foreground colours or the sprites will clash big time.
Walls have to be multi-coloured.

Got the sprite code to at least assemble. Anybody tossing pixels already? That's +2h on my chart *pose*

There's still no loadable set of bit planes to inspire sprite engine coders and no VIC Lisp to write a sprite animation editor overnight either. :P
