Re: Super Mario Bros for VIC-20
I had a go on real hardware. Looks good apart from I don't like the music changing speed with the game slowdown, it should have been locked to an IRQ regardless of FPS issues
Re: Super Mario Bros for VIC-20
I am not a fan of SMB but respect the effort put into it. Shame it had to go down that way but it was inevitable.

Re: Super Mario Bros for VIC-20
Fun idea to port SMB to the c64 and it plays pretty great in my opinion (I don't mind a bit of lag 'n' such if it doesn't make it unplayable) but I really got the urge to play Giana Sisters afterwards though (and I did).
Somehow it felt good to play a game specifically designed for the c64 afterwards.
Maybe we should make a new thread "Giana Sisters for VIC-20" instead
This looks really nice, but the video seems to be nine years old at this point: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgTYLuCvzMA
Actually I found this guy on the plus/4 forums who has made the most beatiful and fab mock ups of Giana Sisters and super M...ikey Bros.

I guess in the end it'd make most sense to not use copyrighted characters / games. I think Pets rescue on the plus4/c16 is a good example of where they've managed to come up with a fun main character and obviously an astonishing game for the system:

Re: Super Mario Bros for VIC-20
I too felt a strong urge to play Giana Sisters after SMB64. An exact copy of SMB is obviously taxing for C64. For example, four sprites are wasted on the purely visual effect of smashing a block of bricks.
Gianna seems like a much more realistic option for Vic, but a mini-SMB that is limited in scope but keeps some of the complexity regarding player-enemy & enemy-enemy interaction would be very cool. Gianna is somewhat lacking in that respect even if it plays great.

Re: Super Mario Bros for VIC-20
It would probably/most likely require a RAM expansion or being on a cartridge to achieve, but if someone can actually do the whole game with only 3K to work with, that'd be impressive!
Also, the original NES game was on cartridge, but the NES didn't have disks or tapes like the VIC-20 or the C64.

I love this idea! I can't comment on whether it's doable or not, but something like this would be awesome!

Re: Super Mario Bros for VIC-20
Nah, that's rather not possible. Consider the standard RAM gone for the screen alone already. +24K should do. The original ROM (64k?) has lots of code to make up for low RAM.
