I acquired a very fine functioning PET model 4032 recently. I am going to try and use my datasette to do some test loading/saving, however, I would prefer to use a floppy disk (if ever a working CBM x040 drive becomes available).
What do other PET owners use, i.e., is there a similar uIEC/SD device out there that can be interfaced for easy transfer of binaries between PC and PET? Just curious, thanks.

You could make a cbmlink (formerly prlink) cable which is a glorified null modem. For an even more glorified solution, there is the C2N232 which however is out of production since many years ago. That device by the way works on almost all 8-bit Commodores, from PET to C128.
I know Jim has mentioned he will try to add IEEE support on the uIEC but I don't think it is offered right now. I have experimented a bit with routines by Ullrich von Bassewitz, who back in 1988 extracted some routines for the CBM-II to convert the cassette input to an IEC device. The code works fine on the CBM 610 (B128) and alike, and in theory it should probably be possible to port to a PET as well. If anybody got to do that, you might be able to install an option ROM that with a SYS and a small circuit would let you connect e.g. a 1541 or uIEC to the cassette port. Yet again, this is not a ready existing solution, and since this hack is not known to ever have existed although the code has been around for 20 years, perhaps there actually are technical limitations for doing so.

In my case I use a Compaq ??? with P3/600 MHz with Win98SE as OS. CBM-HD is run under the real DOS mode. And when I need to transfer to images to another PC, I switch to the GUI mode.
If you rather prefer XP or Vista, no problem. Just install W98 and then install XP/Vista as second OS. But be aware, my laptop didn't dig W98 during the installation (several tries). So I deleted all files not necessary to run it in DOS mode and installed XP using a DOS command.
Another advantage of having (just the DOS part of) W98 onboard: you can use it for Star Commander.
Requirements: a PS/2 compatible printer port and a serial port, 640 KB of RAM :).

To transfer between my PC and PET, I have a 2031 for the PET which reads/writes the same format as a 1541. So I just use cbm4win with a 1541 attached to my PC, and sneakernet the floppy over.
