I did a little one-nighter and ported the ultra-rare VIC 20 title Escape from Mount Dash, the only Ultima branded game ever released on VIC 20, to Commodore 64. I'm using my VIC 20 sound emulation code from Victorian Era to play the sounds, so it's equally out-of-tune as on the original machine!
The music in this game is actually quite exceptional for VIC 20 at the time of release, and perhaps also the strongest aspect connecting it to the Ultima world. Even though they're all classical pieces, they're very well chosen and arranged for the 3 voices, and contribute nicely to the gameplay timing (Try playing without sound and wait for the dungeon level generation to finish without getting frustrated in 2025). The other, lesser connections to other Ultimas are the dungeon name Mt. Drash, the box image, which is a detail from Ultima II poster, and some of the monsters that also appear in other Ultima games. Interestingly, the map style also looks somehow familiar from Richard Garriott's early CRPG's that used a Teletype machine as terminal!
Read elsewhere about the origins of the game and how valuable the very few original pieces are among collectors. It's an intriguing story.
