My new C-16

Just got my C-16 from eBay - wow, this one is like new in its original plastic bag, even smells like new

And then I noticed one ... let's say ... funny thing. Sitting on my desk is another C16... I totally forgot about that one!!!

And guess what, both work

Ok, now I had a close look on my computers and counted 4 VIC's, 2 C=64, 1 C128D and 2 C16 - if I somehwere in the future tell you about a new commie that I want to buy, please stop me if I already own that

Unfortunately my 64k RAM expansion for the C16 does not work, only 16k are noticed and when I switch to GRAPHICS 2,1 it simply srewed up.
Ok, on to eBay, let's see if there is some RAM expansion for me

But why don't you buy a Plus/4 instead if you like more memory???

And I bought a Plus/4 yesterday for 14 Euro

But I like the breadbox-cases more, that's the reason why I was searching for more RAM for the C16... Maybe I can put the Plus/4 into the C-16 case?

Edit: After playing a little bit around with the C-16 I have to admit that the changed keyboard-layout compared to VIC and C=64 is killing me... Who the hell at Commodore had had the idea to put the cursor keys in that stupid position!? maybe I will stick with the original Plus/4 as it has at least some better positioned cursor keys!

Yes, I have had the same thoughts about the c16 keyboard.

I really like the Plus/4 keyboard, and the machine looks nice too so I personaly don't think you should try to mutilate one!

G'day!
I REALLY, REALLY want to get my hands on a C-16! I've been trawling through Aussie eBay for months and haven't come across one yet (at least, not a WORKING one!). I'm sure that all you Pommies have C-16's advertised all the time on eBay but the postage for an item that heavy wouldn't be worth posting to Australia. the C-16 was released in Australia but probably didn't do too well hence the lack of hardware. I suppose I just love the look of the thing. A black VIC with grey keys that's nearly identical to the VIC but at the same time completely incompatible! I love the fact that it needs its very own joysticks and Datassette. For a collector it's little things like that which make collecting so enjoyable. My New Year's resolution was not to buy any further computers or consoles that did not come in their original boxes, etc. This narrows the search somewhat but makes my collection that much more complete and beautiful. Sometimes I find myself just sitting and admiring all those boxes. Yeah, Aussies are wierd! Anyway, any Aussies out there willing to sell me a C-16 (in its box, of course) just speak up!

C2N: You are probably every hardware manufacturer's wet dream of a customer, who appreciates proprietary solutions and the fact that not a single item of what you already own will be useable with your new machine. It requires you to buy new, expensive stuff directly from the manufacturer. The fewer 3rd party providers there is, the happier you get?

Actually, you're right, carlsson, I do have a thing against third party manufacturers. As a collector (here we go!) I like to buy official brand name merchandise (probably why I like Nintendo). Third party stuff, to me, seems a bit hows it going.

To me it doesn't matter if I buy a cable directly from the OEM factory instead of via the official reseller who just slapped on their brand and charges thrice for an otherwise identical product.

In the case of the Commodore 16 and Plus/4, they already had a proprietary tape interface, although some companies had begun selling clone tape recorders. One may argue that the mini-DIN is a cheaper type of connector than the card edge one, but perhaps they also wanted to stall their competitors by suddenly changing the interface. When it comes to joysticks, I'm unsure if the TED-line interface adds any functionality that most Atari-compatible DB9 joysticks didn't, or if that was just greed. People who look twice at the price tag might have skipped "upgrading" to e.g. a Plus/4 in the first place if way too many devices were incompatible compared to its competitors.

Bugger!

You're one of the other Aussies out there that I'm competing against for a C-16. I understand what you mean about short supply. And when they are available on EBay, they sell for more than I'm prepared to pay. At least I'm don't require one in a box...I just want one...along with a Plus/4.

My collection of C64s expands as I satisfy my Ferengi(sp) desire of acquisition, but I really need to broaden the range of my collection.

Ha! Ferengi! I haven't heard about them since I was a kid; I loved Star Trek. Were you thinking the loveable big ear guys from Star Trek or the Arabic word Ferengi (meaning foreigners who come strictly for trading)?
