Three new games for the unexpanded VIC
Good day all,
This is only my third post. Last year I made a single post where I provided an internet shortcut to a game I wrote (Gridslalom).
In the post I promised I would upload some more of my games.
Anyhow here are three additions:
JAB (Just Another Breakout)
Sioux City Showdown, and lastly
Supa Vidya Poker
All three are single player games, joystick only for the Unexpanded VIC.
They run on both PAL and NTSC systems.
Anyway enjoy. If someone could test these on physical hardware I would be much obliged. I haven't owned a physical VIC for a very very long time.
Greetings
P.s.

Re: Three new games for the unexpanded VIC
Nice! I liked "Sioux City Showdown" the best of the three, haven't seen a similar game on the VIC yet. This game would probably profit from a RAM-expansion if the game area could be more colorful.
The video-poker game looks nice as well, though I hoped the colors for hearts and diamonds would be red and clubs and spades would be black. Difficult with a black background though.

Re: Three new games for the unexpanded VIC
Welcome to the forum! Happy to see someone else who enjoys the unexpanded VIC!
All of these games work fine on a physical NTSC VIC.
I really like the old-school Apple ][-ish look of Sioux City Showdown. The art is spot-on here.
JAB is well-done. There must be people in the world who like Breakout
Video Poker feels like poker by someone who's never played poker; but I can imagine the memory being a particularly acute limitation in that the evaluation routine might not leave a lot of space for an expressive interface. At least replace "1" with "A". Oh! I think I get it now, it's like a casino poker machine. I missed that bit.
Thanks for sharing!

Hi there tokra and chysn,
Thank you for having a look at the software and giving feedback.
Tokra you wrote: "The video-poker game looks nice as well, though I hoped the colors for hearts and diamonds would be red and clubs and spades would be black."
Yeah I had it multi colored originally but I had to drop many effects and routines to get the software to fit comfortably.

Thanks for spot regarding the ace. The A existed in the character set, I just forgot to use it. DOH!
So attached to this post is the corrected version. And yes its a casino machine. You know the ones that everyone always walk past

I plan to do an expanded version of the game with multi levels, a bonus stage, a title screen for the expanded VIC. At the moment I'm just finishing up games for the unexpanded though. Unless there's no way a particular game will fit into 3.5k then I'll use expanded memory.
chysn you also wrote: "Welcome to the forum! Happy to see someone else who enjoys the unexpanded VIC!"
That is absolutely correct. I actually love the memory limitation which means there's always this thing where you have to keep an eye on usage. And it also limits the scope of a project and therefore forces completion.
Anyway thank you so much. More games to follow (As I get time and opportunity)
Greetings

Re: Three new games for the unexpanded VIC
Hi kokkiklhs,
Thanks a bunch.
I saw your message in the other thread as well.
Anyhow I'll be uploading one or two games this weekend, if I get the opportunity to finish them up.
Just something general: I found an emulation of an LCD game called Parachute in the Denial archives.
Its a pretty close emulation of the original LCD game and actually quite brilliant.
So that started me thinking about LCD type games.
Here's a screenshot of a game I've been messing around with. Its very far from finished.
Its called Monkey jnr and it emulates an LCD type game.
The game itself never existed but one could say its a weak emulation of Donkey kong jnr.
The reason the characters are all white at the moment is because those are the LCD parts and I wanted to highlight them and check out the look and feel.
Anyhow thought I'd share
Greetings
And a colorized version. I have also done some more character image work to make it a bit more interesting (hopefully).

Looks like a nice LCD game! Though the arms up graphics of "Kong" looks more like he's sitting in front of a vase than it being his body.

Hi there Malcontent,
You wrote: Though the arms up graphics of "Kong" looks more like he's sitting in front of a vase than it being his body
Good eye. You are right it doesn't look like a Kong.
Its a Gamera. In other words: A Turtle
Hence the plastic vase look.

Hey Rich, hope you are well.
Going back to the poker game and coding for the VIC reminds me of this:

Re: Three new games for the unexpanded VIC
Hey there Miklos, your comment made me think that I still needed to finish another game which I have just posted within the last day: Midnight Crimes.
Hope you enjoy it, it is a similar type of game to Sioux CIty Showdown.
