Old VICE?

Where can I find an older version of VICE? The latest one is too slow on my 100MHz PC. I reccon an older version with a more inaccurate emulation would be faster...

I'll have a check at home... I'm sure I've got about 5-6 older zips of Vice (why I have no idea!) sitting on the HD.

How old do you need? On Funet, you can get source code back to VICE 0.11 (July 1996), but maybe you're looking for executable DOS version..

http://www.ftp.funet.fi/pub/cbm/crosspl ... tors/VICE/

However, if you find a version older than VICE 1.6 (current is 1.16), you could as well use Boris' PCVIC or maybe Pfau Zeh, I think. It was somewhere around 1.6 or even the much improved 1.7 that VICE's VIC-20 emulation took off - although it clearly still is far from 100%.

I'm looking for a windows version... Are those other emulators windows programs?

Btw, I tried 1.16 and 1.15 and even between those two, 1.15 is faster...

I still have WinVice 1.7 from July 2001 - I'll send you this one if you want, just send me a PM with your mail address.

I believe Pfau Zeh is a Win32 program (it was so long ago I tried it). However, if you want any decent emulation on your 486DX4/100, you are stuck with DOS. On my old Pentium 200MMX, WinVICE was reasonable, but in order to run cool stuff I would have to go with DOS version of the same VICE edition.

Too bad that you don't live closer to me, or you could've got my old Pentium for free if you liked. It would be a speed monster in comparison.

My old PC was a Pentium 200MMX and yes, it was a lot faster than this. (And it had PCI slots! ;) ) But this is a 100MHz Cyrix 586 so it should compare to a 100MHz Pentium (if there is such a thing...)

Maybe you could send me your old 200MHz PC if I paid for the postage??? With no monitor I mean... Maybe that wouldn't be too expensive...

Robert, Thanks, I sent you a private message...

Also thanks Mayhem for the offer...

Even though you should think this 100MHz 586 should be half the speed of a 200MHz Pentium, it sure feels a lot slower than that. Maybe it has a slower data bus or something... It can't even play a mp3 at full quality. At half the frequency + mono, then it works, almost ;)

Thanks Robert! 1.7 is much faster! It now emulates at 100% speed, but the frame rate is still not very fast... But it's much faster now too!

Maybe I should try the dos version too... I tried "pcvic" and it was really fast, but vice is more compatible with the real thing...

You mean a Cyrix 586 only has ISA+VLB, while the corresponding 486DX/4 (not to mention Pentium) systems of that day already had move to ISA+PCI?

I'll look up how much my old computer weighs and can come back with a figure of minimum postage. If it can be sufficiently packaged, the motherboard w/ CPU and memory alone could be sent if you prefer to upgrade rather than having a lot of PC systems. I could even throw in expansion cards.

I've had a look and I've got every version going back to v1.10, so which one would you like?

Anders, All I know is that I can't fit any PCI cards into this particular machine... and that means I cant plug my USB card into it, and that in turn means that I can't connect my printer to it... I asked at a computer store, and there is no way of getting USB ports on this computer they said. So I would be really happy if you sent me your old PC... A 10 kilo package with a maximum size längd+omkrets of 2 meters costs 175kr. And that is no problem. No problem if it goes a little higher than that either. So it's up to you if you want to go through the trouble of sending it to me... Send me an email so we don't need to speek english. ;)

Mayhem, I have Robert's 1.7 which is older than that, so I don't need yours. But thanks.

And for that matter, most versions of Windows 95 doesn't have USB support IIRC. You need the last Windows 95 USB release or Windows 98. I think my computer has some header on the motherboard that says USB, but I don't have any connectors and I don't know if it would work, but a secondary interface card would surely work.
