Just curious. I love 8 bit machines but over the years I've gravitated back to my very first love - the Vic. Is it your favourite too?

The VIC-20 is wonderful, no doubt about that but unfortunately I can't say it's my favourite 8-bitter.

My two loves are the VIC 20 and the Sega Game Gear. The Game Gear was my first console and is probably the one I would choose if push came to shove.

I like my VIC but my favourite are good old CBM Computers - 8296.

C64 used to be my fav, but since I re-discovered the VIC (circa 2005), I found my way in the 8-bit world .

I mean - it's small, it's friendly, its potential was never fully exploited, there's a lot of info and history to know, games are fun, it's easy to program (at least in BASIC for me), it brings back the first sweet memories with a computer, and it's not impossible to collect every single piece of old software for it. There are more reasons, but I hope you go my point .

In one word: the VIC is the first one I look for when I open the cupboard!

Assuming a VIC with a Mega-Cart, it goes straight to the top of my order of "love":

• VIC
  C128D
  C128
  C16
  PET 4032
  SX64
  C64
  Atari 800
  Atari 7800
  Atari VCS

If just a stock VIC 20 (no Mega-Cart), then it would drop below the C16.
Saehn, how can you say you'd like a C64 more than a C128?

I never had another 8-bit machine other than the VIC-20 my parents bought. I did desire a C64 but the next computer I bought was a Atari ST.

I think you know what my favourite computer is... the Vic20 is pretty high up though

I also thought the C128 specs where pretty good but then I read an article in the Australian newspaper about the Amiga and my attitude changed. I don't know why I opted for an Atari instead of an Amiga, might have been cost.

The more powerful machines could do much better graphics and sound but the VIC forced you to think about how you used the resources you had. Also it was incredibly easy to program.

I love the Astrocade; it's a close second. The Vectrex is novel. The Atari 2600 and 7800 are both quite fun, BUT no other device gives a user such a variety of experiences as a Commodore VIC 20. You can enjoy a huge selection of programs in numerous formats: disk, tape, roms, carts...

And you can make your own games! Your own fucking games! Right away. Try learning Bally Basic (after finding the cart and cables needed). The VIC is the most accessible 8bit machine for user creativity. No rom burners needed. This poll should be unanimous.

For me the VIC was always the other computer...the one I didn't have. That's why I'm enjoying learning about it now.

The VIC was my first computer, but I had a BBC micro for longer.

(The BBC was also great for creativity. It had an awesome BASIC - way better than Microsoft BASIC, a built in assembler, and some great graphic modes.)
