Yeah, I agree you could fit something under 40k, with help of some look up tables for mirroring and calculating the X position of the sprites. You might also be able to compress background graphics to save space. But this still won't be as fast as pre-rendering all the graphics.Paolopepper wrote: ↑Fri May 01, 2020 12:34 pm I’d like to think that more efficient, newer programming techniques would get it down to somewhere near 35k.

How about Ultimem with IK as firmware?beamrider wrote:What about the possibility of releasing it on cartridge?

Re: [WIP] International Karate VIC20 [Ultimem]
I absolutely agree with what you wrote! I surely won't buy ultimem just to play an (even excellent) game!! I will probably buy it if it was released on cartridge, instead!beamrider wrote: ↑Tue May 05, 2020 4:30 am If there was a version that ran on a 35K Vic but then ran faster and/or with more animation frames with Ultimem or perhaps FE3 as well, that would vastly increase the target audience. I wouldn't buy an Ultimem just to play one game, however good the game was as I'm perfectly happy with my mega-cart.
What about the possibility of releasing it on cartridge?
No one should tolerate death and violence because tolerance will generate habit.
Re: [WIP] International Karate VIC20 [Ultimem]
I prefer having an Ultimem plugged in instead of having a stack of cartridges laying around. And you'll buy an Ultimem anyhow. Resistance is futile.
Slapping the game onto a FE3 sounds pretty doable.
However, if you're going full blast with unrolling perhaps there's a way to bring on digi sounds. Have some real-time exomizer decompression routines left for playing samples for example that probably won't go into Arukanoido. I'm there for code review if you like.
The background already looks better than what one'd expect from the VIC:..

Re: [WIP] International Karate VIC20 [Ultimem]
In the very first post of this thread, it is mentioned the game will require the 1024kB RAM version of the Ultimem. Even the VIC MIDI with 128kB doesn't have enough. The Mega-Cart has 35kBytes of RAM!!
AFAIK, the FE3 offers the same amount of RAM as the MC because it's the VIC-20's normal directly accessible limit. Ultimem uses paged banks and therefore has a much higher limit. If there was a version that ran on a 35K Vic but then ran faster and/or with more animation frames with Ultimem or perhaps FE3 as well, that would vastly increase the target audience. Having made the Behr-Bonz which carries 2 MBytes of ROM, I know for a fact a cart of IK20 can be made. However, IMHO, it's unthinkable to make a 35k version of a game intended to use 30 times more.
Be normal.

Re: [WIP] International Karate VIC20 [Ultimem]
Sort of excess of RAM for games feasible with a fraction of it.. the VIC is following the same well-known trend of its Windows based descendants

Hey guy, what's going on? We all really hope it's not due to personal reasons!
