easy way to transfer games to a Vic20

I know there is a 4p topic, but I must say as a newbie it is a bit difficult (and yes I went to have a look)
what easy way can you advise to transfer files (games) to a vic20, if one exists?

Two questions arise here:

- what is the format the files, or games or stored in, and on what system? (PC, Unix, other ...)
- what hardware is available to the VIC, besides the main unit? (datasette, disc drive, ...)

This is necessary information, from which one can deduce if you maybe need extra hardware to do the transfer. And then one can take a look which software is needed.

You surely don't want to print out the program listing somewhere, and type it into the VIC.

Which forms of hardware do you have available? Tape recorder, floppy drive, old PC, new PC, memory cards, serial cables? Do you want to download software just for the moment or store on a native VIC media, e.g. tape or floppy disk?

As you understand, the answer differs a bit depending who you are and which kind of transfer you are looking for.

I have only the computer
nothing else

I have a PC with Vista
I have
sd,mmc card
usb and parallel ports and cables

Looks like a candidate for a uIEC/SD device.

The uIEC is connected to the VIC-20 over a serial port cable. For most purposes, it acts like a floppy disc drive.

On the PC side, the files are simply transferred to/from the SD card as usual. The uIEC also understands *.d64 files, which contain complete floppy disc images.

Yes i think this is the easiest way to transfer programs to the Vic in PRG form, if you need to copy a full disk d64 / d71 / d81 file image to a real 1541 / 1571 / 1581 disk using an SD/MMC card and you have a C64 too, you may consider an MMC64 interface or newest.

star commander on a dos pc and a x1541 cable of a supported variety will get images from pc to a 1541

there are also more modern d64 disk image manipulators but the names escape me.
