Recommend a Good Host
Recommend a Good Host
I am too overwhelmed by the research. Does anyone have personal experience with a good web host?

I've used godaddy.com for about five years now and I've always been impressed with their service, prices, and friendliness. Never had a single minor issue in 5 years. Very easy to use site management features as well, and I haven't had a domain hijacked from them like I did from the previous host I was with (can't remember their name offhand).
I think Jeff is looking for future hosting of the Denial site. Tripod gives me the creeps just thinking about all the pop-ups, prevention of deep linking and I believe a fair share of spyware coming out if it, or if it depends on the particular user's homepage. Say NO to Tripod, is my experience.

Have you considered checking out the reviews of the hosting sites, with services such as these:

http://webhostinggeeks.com/
http://www.100best-free-web-space.com/
http://www.hostingtrail.com/web-hosting ... QQodzRlNnw
Do note that Tripod doesn't seem to make the lists.
Hope this helps, Jeff!

If Jeff indeed is looking to move the Sleeping Elephant domain with all its subpages - both personal and Denial, he simply needs a web hotel. One that comes with full scripting options, freely available (MySQL) database, no worries about pointing your own domain name to the account, probably automatic statistics and of course relatively plenty of disk space. I don't know how expensive a reliable web hotel is in the USA, but I don't think it should cost more than $5 per month, perhaps as low as $2-3. At least it is the going rates in Sweden for a web hotel with the specs I gave and since both the market and competition is much bigger in the States, I have a hard time imagining it would be many times more expensive. Of course, you can always find hosts charging $50/month for 99.999% uptime and guaranteed personal support 24/7, but as long as everything runs as it should 99.9% of the time, the support isn't quite as important. Only when things go bad you will seek for help.
Previously Jeff mentioned that his hosting option is a bit pricy, and more than once I've considered to donate some money through PayPal. I don't know if anyone else is already doing this? Perhaps we should all help out by giving a small (or large) donation once in a while since we all benefit from the forum, wiki and other services. A change to a more reliable and perhaps also cheaper host than the current one won't happen for a while anyhow as he paid for a full year, not rechargeable. After the last hiccup, the forum seems to have run quite well too, although I understand if he and the rest of us don't want to end up in the same mess as earlier this spring.

Naturally, I would suggest the service I use called Surftown:
http://www.surftown.eu
The 500GB hotel costs €5.99 per month but smaller ones can be had for about US $3.00.
I have never had any kind of trouble with this service.
Just one option.

I agree, a web hotel such as Surftown is the best option if you can afford it. And I'm all for making a donation to keep the site alive.
About Tripod, I totally agree with Carlsson there. If you switch to Tripod there is a very real risk I will stop visiting Denial. Spyware doesn't worry me since I'm using Linux at home, but all the popups, horrible blinking banners, and all the other evil stuff take all the joy out of visiting Tripod hosted sites.
