VIDEO: TheVIC-20 vs Commodore VIC-20
I just released this video comparing TheVIC20 to an original VIC-20. I have to say I went into it without high hopes, but it slowly won me over. I was really impressed by the end. Had the done a few things differently (namely, serial communication over USB) it would have been close to perfect. Thank...

Re: ** New Frontiers in VIC-Hires-Graphics, Part 16
Thanks Mike, I tested it and it works just fine if you set the file name for TheC64 or TheVic20. Ilopis, here is a tested working version of the full demo. flinale-pal_B1B2B3.zip That's great. Thank you! I'll try that today. What did you have to do to get them to work on TheVIC20? (other than the p...

Re: ** New Frontiers in VIC-Hires-Graphics, Part 16
Here are two other images I converted to 104x256 Wide FLI (PAL, +24K RAM required) some time ago: https://dateipfa.de/.Public/denial/images/104x256/uyi2.png ( download ) https://dateipfa.de/.Public/denial/images/104x256/md.png ( download ) As part of my research on THEVIC20, I tried those programs ...

Re: Why not better composite video like C64?
Thanks, Michael. I'll give it a try. The other day I tried the diagnostics cartridge and it reported an error on UC8 (but there's no UC8 on the board), so I'll have to investigate that a bit. In the meanwhile, I released the video today: https://youtu.be/4tbvpRiM36E I'll definitely revisit that VIC ...

Re: Why not better composite video like C64?
In the meanwhile you could try out this small program to test the colour RAM: Oh nice little program! (I didn't realize that the VIC 20 BASIC didn't need spaces, interesting). I tried it and it all came up good, so that's strange. Anyway, I tweaked the video output a bit more and I think this is th...

https://dateipfa.de/.Public/denial/images/104x256/md.png The three colourful columns to the right are 'debug' output that show how the background, border and auxiliary colour are redefined for each raster line. :) The white spot down in the fog that consistently appears in your photos is a bit stra...

Re: Why not better composite video like C64?
If you have a +24K RAM expansion at hands, try out this picture: https://dateipfa.de/.Public/denial/tools/md.zip (and maybe also post a screenshot of it?) - this one really needs some kind of improved video circuit. :) Here are the results. And since you mentioned that it could be a result of just ...

Re: Why not better composite video like C64?
More interesting findings! :D Here's the color test pattern with the unmodified video: IMG_1911.JPG And here it is with the s-video out (going into that SCART adaptor): IMG_1917.JPG Clearly much better. BUT... I did something completely by accident while I was trying the different configurations and...

Re: Why not better composite video like C64?
I mentioned a capacitor with 220 or 470 pico farads to connect Chroma to Luma to form the Composite signal. You used nearly 1000 times that value, which at the carrier frequency of Chroma acts like a short - which you don't want. :) Right. I was going by the s-mod described here, that's why I tried...

Re: Why not better composite video like C64?
I did a couple experiments and I have some interesting findings (not what I wanted but hey). First of all, this is the output of my VIC 20CR unmodified (just with the mods that came from the factory): default.JPG So I removed FB7, added a 0.1uF capacitor and hooked that up directly to pins 4-5 so it...

Re: Why not better composite video like C64?
Clear video for Vic-20, there is also for C64/C128 https://www.etsy.com/listing/775553994/clearvideo-for-vic-20-rf-modulator And there is an universal version too: https://www.etsy.com/listing/789437205/clearvideo-universal-s-video-filtering Interesting! Those seem to be specifically for RF signals...

Re: Weird mod on underside of board
By the way, since I'm working on this board, I wanted to resurrect this thread again. I compared the board modifications to the CR schematics and this is what I came up with: VIC_chip.png I get the part of moving one end of C13 to the other side of the adjustable resistance since that's closer to ho...

Re: Why not better composite video like C64?
If I'm not wrong there is something already done for that on the web. If someone find it, please post a link here. I'd love to check it out at some point. I'll probably do the s-video mod anyway just to test, but it would be nice to have options. By the way, is it normal to have different VIC chips...

Re: Why not better composite video like C64?
Hi Michael, I thought of doing the combination afterwards, but I was convinced it would be worse than the dedicated circuit the VIC 20 has inside. But maybe not! :) I'll try that. Also, technically, I have an adapter for composite to SCART that has an s-video input, but I suspect it does the same th...
