Is the character ROM really broken or is there a different possibility?
I have a VIC-20 I built from spares. I replaced the VIC, soldered a bodge wire to fix a broken trace and sorted a poor solder joint where a pin was missed. The computer fires up and all seems to be working fine, except when I run the diagnostics from the HyperExpander, it tells me the character ROM ...

Restoring key caps
I have successfully restored a VIC-20 case using sodium percarbonate and a good dose of Aussie sun. It looks very good indeed and worked a treat. However, the keys are a different story. They are badly faded and attempting to retr0brite them is not an option. I've done that before and while the writ...

Re: Donkey Kong/Crazy Kong cartridge
Was this the cart? https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/5eqhri/32_years_ago_my_dad_was_hired_to_import_this_game/ Yes, I think that is the one. I asked my brother who helped me break said joysticks and he said it was a Donkey Kong distributed through Atari, so the image matches what it was. If ...

Donkey Kong/Crazy Kong cartridge
Ok, this sounds a bit like a "Do you have the one with that guy who was in the cinemas last year" but I am chasing a cartridge or a CRT image of the above game. I cannot remember if it was a Donkey Kong or a Crazy Kong, I can't remember the publisher either but I know the cartridge was bla...

Re: For new users - make a post or say hello
Well, not a new member as such but a quiet one :D Oh yes, I do. There are four active ones in my study/man cave alone but I am in the process of cleaning up and selling here and there. I also have way too many old 8- and 16-bit computers I am slowly separating from. There is one thing I have way le...

Re: For new users - make a post or say hello
Well, not a new member as such but a quiet one :D I'm a retired IT support tech, sys admin, networking engineer and software developer who hates computers these days...except those old machines that got me into this IT mess in the first place :D My first exposure to computers was the PETs we had at ...

I thought the bottom photo was the Euro-style keyboard with the less square looking "Q". No?

Re: De-yellowing your VIC-20 case
I did do some case brightening using H2O2 and good old Aussie sun. The results were mixed. I tried a VIC case and it worked brilliantly. It was all back to its original glory and looked great. However, the Breadbin 64 I tried failed miserably and left everything splotchy and all. The same happened t...

Assembler for the VIC
I've been dabbling with assembler programming many, many moons ago but never got too far. Every now and then, I drag out the VIC or fire up VICE and have a play with things but I just don't seem to be able to find a decent assembler I can actually get to work. Back in the day I had a VC1213 but used...

Re: VIC-20 white case, silver label
One of my VIC-20s also has the PET-style keyboard, silver label and no yellowing on the case. It was made in Japan, has mid-1982 date codes on the chips and the serial number 533475. Where does your case say it was made? I think both time and location of manufacture lead to the various differences ...
