I have made a start on a collection of games for the new The Vic20. I used the ones in a previous thread for FE3, SD2IEC 1986 and Mike's Games to start.

This presents a small problem for TheVic20 users in that there is no config menu for the memory and this is controlled at file selection with tags or by a directory level control.

There are 2 main ways to approach this and your thoughts would be welcome.

1. Rename each file with the tags to run it on TheVic20 and TheC64

e.g. Abductor_MVTP.prg for Vic20 Pal etc.

2. Create a taxonomy / directory structure and place games without renaming them into the structure. Each directory has a default cjm
file to control the configuration of the Vic20.

e.g. Top level would be: Unexpanded, +3k, +16k (+8k is redundant I think), +24k, +35k. The next level could retain existing structures
like Author or be ordered by Year

The first option is robust but probably a pain to create manually but could be created with a renaming script later from the second route which seems to be the simplest way to go and would prevent the majority of misloaded games for newer users if curated well.

Q. Is there a good archive already organised by Vic20 expansion size to start from? It does not matter if the files are .prg, d64, tap

Q. What is the best tool for Windows 10 that can unpack a D64 so I can remove individual prg files from a disk with mixed memory size games?

Thanks for any assistance with a Denial TheVic20 archive.

Did someone manage to make software requiring accurate disk functionalities work ? (like with some demos fastloaders) .
For me it doesn't work, despite AD flag or CJM config files....

in C64 mode, it works.....

Here is an unexpanded demo requiring true drive emulation on VICE and not working for me with accurate disk settings on THEVIC20 :
https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=32034 (try OMD_Delux.d64).

The Deluxe loader crashes for me too.

I renamed the d64 as it already had one underscore in the title which might have been thrown out the file tags but no joy.

I tried AD and RO tags and a CJM file but it crashes.

The standard version works.

I will try and find a few more fastloader examples to try.

Anyone know any to save searching?

Hmm, now that works.... I really wonder what I changed to get that... :? maybe the order of the accuratedisk param in the CJM file?! :P
Now I have this

Code: Select all

X:vic,pal,fullheight,accuratedisk,noaudioscale

I thought it could be the accurate sound timing with no audio scale in conjunction with accurate disk as the full manual mentions this but it isn't.

I deleted the noaudioscale and Robotic Liberation still runs fine.

I had the turbo load turned off.

I will try more later.

Update: I tested several and they all seem to work as long as TheVic20 turbo load is disabled and the cjm is correctly configured with accuratedisk.

noaudioscale was not used in my tests.

Are there any commercial games with turboload on the Vic20?

I have a mixture of filename flags and default cjm files. Tape files I have were handily named with [8k] or [16k] etc so I wrote a batch file to rename those to _MVB1 or _MVB1B2 for example. Same with CRT's, they had [2000] or [A000] in their filename. I have some PRG's that are in sub-folders for their memory size so a cjm in each folder worked nicely there. I've not tried any D64 files but the TAP, CRT and PRG's are mostly working but I find better results doing so from classic mode.

Finally available in Australia - via the slightly convoluted route of amazon.com.au <- amazon.co.uk!

But price and shipping are both reasonable, so I gambled the cash, along with at least a dozen other Aussie Vic-20 enthusiasts.

Cheers,

Mike.

Just played around with my new TheVic20 today.

Seems okay, although I tried to run up blue-meanies and it crashed with "undef at line 10"?

Has anyone managed to get the MegaCart image working with it? I get as far as the MC menu, but when I select a game it just hangs. Pity as that's by far the easiest way to play cart images I find.

I've been waiting for this to come to the US. It's over $300 on ebay now and growing farther and farther beyond my reach. :x Did I just miss the opportunity all together? Are they discontinued now? I'd really like to know the numbers; how many were even made?

The stock on Amazon UK went pretty much following pre-order from what I can tell. There was stock on some European Amazon stores for a time but unless they do another run I think that will be it. They're focusing what might be an A500 of some kind but no real news on what's coming.

Stock of TheC64 in the US has be troublesome. Distributors don't seem to want to pick it up from what I hear. They announce when Amazon US has stock on their Facebook page every now an then.
