Vic Nibbler
Name: Vic Nibbler
Author: Andy H @ Hewco.uk
Released: 6th August 2019
Requirements: PAL VIC-20 with 3K-expansion (may work on NTSC also)
Description:
Vic Nibbler is a remake of a wonderful arcade game created in 1982 by Rock-Ola. The Vic 20 remake shares many features of the arcade game.
Guide Nibbler the snake around the maze. Like many a snake game, Nibbler will grow when you eat food and will lose a life if colliding with your tail. Unlike many a snake game, Nibbler will turn automatically when it reaches a corner. If navigating the maze with a growing snake was not enough, there is also a time limit of 99 seconds. Nibbler can pause at T-junctions but don't wait too long because you'll be penalised on time if you do. There are 10 unique mazes and unlimited waves. Every few waves will see Nibbler get a bit faster.
Nibbler requires a 3k RAM expansion and can be controlled with Joystick or Keys (Q, A, O, P).
The game was made with Turbo Rascal, the source code will be available for anyone interested in learning how it was made in the next release.

Re: Vic Nibbler
I have always liked Nibbler and it's about time that Vic gets a proper conversion
I think the addition of a maze makes the standard growing-snake mechanism much more fun - particularly from the start of a game. It's quite an obvious addition too as the snakes themselves provide maze-like structures. It's odd that there wasn't even a Nibbler-like game to Vic in the '80s. Or was there?
I made a Nibbler-clone myself in Flash. It included the 1st maze of Nibbler but also several others intricate mazes that were more puzzle oriented. And yes, I have seen the 2015 documentary Man vs Snake

Re: Vic Nibbler
Thanks all - I had a lot of fun making it and I'm already started on a second Vic 20 game.
I've just added a small random routine I found here on Denial as I need a little randomisation in this one.

Re: Vic Nibbler
From Wiki:
But your - otherwise wonderful - conversion performs a six-digits score! Too bad I can't emulate my fellow Italian player Enrico Zanetti, who topped American Tim McVey with a 1,001,073,840 score on September 27, 1984The game was the first to include nine digits of score, allowing players to surpass one billion points

Re: Vic Nibbler
Hehe no, spare bytes were tight so I decided to keep it 16 bit . It’s been optimised a little since then so maybe I can come back to add bigger numbers in the future.

Hey, this is great! You should consider making a physical copy of this.

Looks like an excellent conversion, can't wait to try it out!!!
For some reason I didn't know the original game, I have to try it in MAME...
