Mod an MD 6-but pad to work with Vic/C64 & GX4000

I am planning to modify a 6 button megadrive pad (just using the threen main buttons) for use with the GX4000.
Is there a way to wire it up to keep the 2nd fire button functionality for the GX4000 as well as make it safe for use with a VIc-20 / C64?
(I was going to wire button 3 to be a duplicate of Up)

As far as I see all GX4000's directions and buttons are activated by connecting Pins 1 2 3 4 & 6 to Gnd on pin 8, just like the Vic-20. But with Fire 1 being Pin 7 connecting to pin 8, which on the vic would be sending 5v to Ground.
(inside a gx4000 pad, there are no components, also on the pad Fire 1 is pin 6 and Fire 2 is Pin 7 so Guess the wiki got it wrong, or the pads are mislabeled.)
I guess one way would be to put a switch on it so is Gnds Pin 1 instead of Pin 7, but would have to remember to switch it every time.
