Denial

I got an offer of buying unused 6525A in batches of 10 for 170USD (incl shipping) from China. If there is someone in Europe that needs such I can buy 10 or 20 and sell them for 17EUR/pc+shipping (usually around 6EUR untracked to Northern Europe or 25EUR with tracking).

The 6525A is the Triport interface that goes into B600, B700, 1551 (disk drive), CDTV, A570 and MagicVoice.

Anybody interested? They will be untested, so always a risk there.

Sounds expensive to me, compared to 6526A which are 36us$ posted for 10.

The 6525 is a very different chip from the 6526 and is a bit of a rarity.

Actually, 170$US for 10 of them is a very good deal but you should expect about 3 or 4 of them to be faulty...

That is quite poor statistics for a "new" old stock component. Have you bought 6525A from China in the past?

The MOS 6526 is the complex interface adapter used in C64, C128 and a few other devices.

The MOS 6525 is the Tri-port interface adapter only used in the above units. On ebay the 6525A sells for around 35USD/pc.

Not the 6525/6525A specifically. Chinese resellers carry and offer all sort of 65XX MOS chips. Recently, they liquidated a large batch of 6581 SIDs with completely unrealistic date codes and this was extensively discussed on Amibay.

Whatever type of MOS chip you buy from Chinese resellers, the defect rate is pretty much consistent between 25%-50%.

Somebody suggested a Chinese fab may have been able to reproduce some Commodore chips but that doesn't seem to be the case as someone managed to get the die under a microscope and confirmed these were genuine MOS/CSG chips.

The more likely source is Commodore had large warehouses in Hong Kong with tons of of surplus inventory of all sorts of stuff. Since the communists took over, the content of these warehouses must have shifted ownership dozens of times.

I recently acquired a boxed Magic Voice on Ebay... which arrived today.... DEAD!


Luckily the Seller/Ebay instantly made good on a full refund and said I could keep the item. (Thanks Global Priority Shipping Program!! haha)

This chip could be what I need??... but who knows?

Guess I have another thing that will acquire dust... oh well.

What Commodore machines are these used in? I would be interested in acquiring a couple of these chips as I always like to have a few spare MOS chips on hand.

Eh no, there seemed to be no interest and I was in no immediate need for them. If their failure rate is as high as you suggest, then its also a very risky business for anyone else. I could say that you need to buy two to get a working one, but still you might end up with two dead ones as I have no way of testing them at the moment...

Once I get time to get my B700 running I can buy some and use that as a test platform.

Ok... I am in no rush as I am not out any money on the Magic Voice now, so I will just put it aside for another day.

I believe everything inside it is socketed too, so it should make for a relatively easy swapout later.

The B700 has been on hold for some time due to my SuperCPU expansion. Once I finish that, will start on the B700 restoration. It lacks a 6525, but I have most other ICs and components. I do have a full wafer of mos 6525(!), but that is for preservation.

Due to the high fail rate of the 6525 I am thinking of making a CPLD replacement.

6525 is a 6523 with possibility to specialize port "C" with handshaking and interrupt lines....
the fist step to replicate a 6525 with CPLD is..... replicate a 6523!

1551 need a simple 6523, but in mine one there is a 6525!
