I've been sick in bed for the last couple of days. Maybe there is a psycological bound between my brain and the database...

I think there's enough computer/web specialists on this site to put a strategy together to prevent this from happening again.
Sure makes you realize when this did happen how much you enjoy this board
I no tech-dude but is there a firewall/electrical voltage/nasty virus hook-ed up for hackers to get if they tried hacking into this forum? Any way of getting their IP address to send them a nice little welcome gift
Glad we're back up and running again

Christian, I want to install the new version to a new folder in the directory and then move the database over to it. There seems to be some problem in doing so. Do I have to shut down this forum first? I am not sure if my service allows more that one bb at a time. Do you know if that would be a problem?

I'm not sure. I just tried to search for information about this but I didn't find any. I found a support article saying how two different forums can share the same database by having different prefixes for the fields in the database but that is not what you want. You want both forums to access the same fields in the database.
I'm not sure if there can be a problem with having two forum installations using exactly the same database information in the same database. My guess is that it should work for you to access the database to read posts in the new installation but if posts are made from both forum installations at the same time, i.e. both forums tries to change database content at the same time, maybe there could be a problem. However, this is just a guess. I don't really know how it works.
In any case, I suggest that you make sure that you have the same config.php file for both forum installations since you want to access the same database information. You could copy that file from your old forum installation to the new one. config.php is a file that is created when you install a forum and it contains information about the database.

I've never touched any forum software myself, but I suppose it depends whether the new release does any database improvements, such as changing the layout of tables or how they interconnect. If there are only updates in the PHP scripts, I see no trouble in pointing a new installation to an existing database (except for the race condition which Christian described).
Erik at Vintage Computer Forum updated his phpBB a number of times, and has for almost a year considered moving onto some other software, either free or even commercial, due to the relatively large amount of hacks and patches that has appeared.
