The new C64x

Post by PhilRanger »

http://www.commodoreusa.net/CUSA_C64.aspx
It's back... and better than ever! The new Commodore 64 is a modern functional PC as close to the original in design as humanly possible. It houses a modern mini-ITX PC motherboard which comes in two configurations. The C64x Ultimate (C64x-UL) has a Dual Core 525 Atom processor and the an nVidia ION2 graphics chipset, and our flagship model, the C64x Extreme (C64x-EX) which comes with a second generation Intel Sandybridge Core i7 capable of reaching speeds of 3.3Ghz. The new Commodore 64 comes in the original's taupe brown/beige color, with other colors to follow.

It would be more impressive if it wasn't just a PC. e.g. if it included a real C64 implemented using an FPGA or similar and with 9 pin joystick & maybe even a cartridge port, but with video & sound output via HDMI .

Ive been looking at these for a while, overall they are unimpressive. They need some actual hardware compatibility.

I'm curious to see what a retro-looking VIC might be like. I'd probably buy it on principle.

By the way, shouldn't this go into the "Other Systems" section?

This also has the plugs of the C64 or do you have to convert everything to DVD? Thanks.

Yep, done :). IMVHO, this should definitely go to the "Don't Buy This System" section :P .

check on this address:

http://pinoytutorial.com/techtorial/com ... mpressive/

you can see commodore vic pro and commodore vic slim....

Personnaly, all this stuff.... and the new c64, I don't find very exciting, I'd be more excited by new manufacture of authentic vics and c64's with all the ports and appropriate chips..... if the cases were true proportional replicates (they are not), I would buy the new c64 for the case as repair parts for real c64s and use the gutted-out PC outside of the fake c64 context.

All the the development has been done for the old graphic chips in FPGA. How much would it have cost them to include it in this machine?

In theory, with an empty C64 case + keyboard, a Keyrah, and an inexpensive mini-PC running Windows XP and VICE, one could build his own "new C64"... and have it closer to the original (9-pin joystick port included!) at a fraction of the price.

I think I will adopt this solution once I'll be old and all my original Commodore computers will be dead :P .

But the boot time will be 2 minutes instead of 2 seconds

Yep you're right. Let's say having a fake Commodore (keyrah+PC) has pros and cons:

PROS
Original keyboard
Original mouse
Original joystick
All the games you want, and they load immediately
All the C= platforms you want (choose from VICE)
No RAM problems
No storage problems
Eye-friendly monitor
Can also be used as a regular PC (web etc)

CONS
No 'real machine' experience
Minor sound and graphic differences
Wait minutes until Windows is ready

I still prefer loading stuff from disk and/or tape, because I'm nostalgic and romantic - but the alternate system I described may be a good setup, certainly better than the C64x :P .

PROS = LESS shelf space.

CONS = LUDICROUS shelf space even for 1 / 10,000th of the software and manuals typically found on a PC (Linux) solution.

The intangible, of course, is the end user "real" experience coupled with the memories invoked by it. Tactile feedback from handling an original cartridge or floppy with its associated artwork, well, is it bit perverse to most people, but I think most of us here understand it well. :D
