Just looking for a new 6502 but arcadecomponents.com doesn't have any only B's.

I have some As but haven't put them on the site yet. The B is just a faster rated CPU that can run at a higher clock speed. It will run fine in the VIC 20.

So, Let me get this straight... You are saying that the The 6502B chip variant commonly found in 1541 drives will drop right in and work fine in a VIC-20?? I have always wondered this.... :0) Tony K. Has anyone here actually ever tried this???

As the two posters from 2010 are somewhat unlikely to respond, here's the relevant part of my VC-20's mainboard:

Its just the maximum clock rating, many MOS chips have this. In a VIC20 (or C64 for that matter) any "A" or "B" (and variants without) can be used
