Mysterious cuts in the cartridge connectors?

Post by Boray »

What are these? What is their purpose? On some cartridges there is a cut on one side, like a gap between two connectors. On other carts, there are two of them - one on each side. On others there is no cut at all... Any explanation?

Maybe there are other units using the same spacing (industrial standard), but using a keying not to fit the wrong way. Some manufacturers making cartridges for several of these systems might use the same boards?

Compare the tape and userports, which are reversed and keyed on the VIC. While the C2N also is keyed, most userport devices I've seen didn't bother much to respect that.

The very early Vics had keyed expansion ports, you needed both cutouts to allow the cart to be inserted.

C= soon found non keyed connectors were cheaper.

.. unless they own a small saw and don't bother to ruin the collector's value by making small cuts in the board. 8)

The keys can easily be removed with thin nosed pliers.
