After 25 years... my own 80 column cartridge!!

Post by eslapion »

Yes, finally, after 25 years of waiting... I finally have my own 80 column display cartridge.

Just as I suspected, I connected the video signal from it to the Y channel of the Y-Pb-Pr input of my HD TV set and got a stunningly clear display.

Now... if only I could get software to take advantage of it...

You're probably right... I just hope the equipment lasts that long.

Looks like it will!

Congratulations. I saw that auction shortly after it started and I debated about bidding on it but when I saw you get involved I figured I would stay out of it lest I either end up costing you more money or worse yet, snatching it out from underneath you.

Enjoy it. They're pretty cool. I've been coveting Leif's for a few years now although, honestly, I've no use for it.
In the end it will be as if nothing ever happened.

I already managed to get versions of the Scott Adams games modified to display properly on 40 column displays.

These "altered" versions were really made for the C64 but I see no reason why they wouldn't work with this type of display adapter.

What is the name on the cartridge, Francois?

Congratulations, I truly hope you enjoy it! If I find any other software for it, you'll be the first (well second anyway!) to know.

I have a word processor and mailing list software that was written just for the cartridge. I think I even uploaded it to Zimmers (can't remember). It was distributed by Data-20 corporation with the cartridge.

I've sent the dump to several people here on DENIAL.

The sticker on the box says it is a protecto 80.

But there is a displayed message when switching between 40/80 column mode that says it is copyrighted by Data20.

Would you have a link to that?

I will soon try to operate this cart along with programmer's aid and see if the two can get along well.

80 columns makes a great environment to program stuff for the VIC.

Eslapion,

Files have been sent to your personal e-mail.

VIC USER and myself have had the Programmer's Aid cart running with the Data-20 board. It mostly worked. There were a few quirks but nothing big I don't think. I think if you switch from 40 to 80 colums with the function key you then have to reset the P.A. cartridge....not sure if I remember that correctly though...

Oh, I should mention that a bunch of PET games will run on the VIC with this 80 column cartridge. So can see what is going on in the game, but anything that POKES to the PET screen memory locations will need to be changed to the 80 column cart screen locations.

Thanks a lot Ral-Clan!

In the past I said I was interested in trying to make copies of this 80 column board. Now that I have one, I can but I have no time for that at the moment.

Great. I remember there is a PET card game that plays okay on the VIC. There is also a game where you have a helicopter and need to put out a fire that will mostly play (but the POKE values need to be changed to make it fully functional). If you manage to convert any, please let us 80-column users know. Thanks!

Having typed in and played Hammurabi by David Ahl back in 1983, I rediscovered these:

Maybe I'll type in and save on a tape a couple of these on the VIC for the fun of it!

Excellent!

I have the first 2 of these books.

A good source of basic programs is always helpful.

I don't have spare time now, but maybe we could use OCR and save some typing.
