Making a cheap Power supply.

Post by Rich »

Hi Everyone,
Been looking on youtube and google to make a cheap PSU with a 9v dc 1amp Switching Power Supply Adapter Charger(plug in wall type) and a 5V dc 2amp usb charger. Watched the videos and pin outs but I can not get my head round the 2 pins that require the 9v? The Switching Power Supply Adapter Charger has a + and - cable, do I just use the 9v side cable and conect it to the 2 pins or do I use both one on one and the other ?

The usb cable goes to pin 1 and 5 but 6 and 7 what part of the 2 cables from the 9v power do I put to which pin? + and - ?

The VIC-20 (and C64) need 9V AC (alternating current) on pins 6 and 7. Don't connect 9V DC to either pin, you'll probably fry something.

I built a PSU for an early two pin model, I used a toroidal transformer for that.

I don't think you'll fry something - but it will not work :)

It'll work - mostly - if you don't connect anything at all to the 9VAC pins. That voltage is used on the user port for things like RS232 and some modems, and also for the datasette motor.

All working now

So with a 5v 2 amp (DC)phone charger and this 240v to 9v (AC) duel convertor, Ive got a cheap power supply ( Its a bit messy in the power case with all the wires) but all working got my sd2iec from the 5v tape supply.
