Is this a particularly low serial number and if so, should I be excited?

Post by cbmeeks »

As the title says...

I've come across another VIC-20 that's in pretty bad shape but nothing that couldn't be cleaned up (although, it's missing a few keys).

But what really caught my eye is the low serial number. Well, I think it's low.

Now, I don't have it right in front of me but I think it is 8436.

It's the AC version but the keyboard is NOT the large PET style that is so desirable. Which makes me think this is no big deal.

What do you think?

Take a look in the registry

https://cbmvic.net/registry

You don't say what country this is from but there are plenty of lower serials recorded.

Ah, thanks for the link.

It's an NTSC version but I don't remember the country it was built/assembled. I will look shortly when I get off work.

Thanks!

Please show us a Pic of the Serial Number Label of VIC #8436... I am dumbfounded as to why you did not include it in your Original post... The VIC-20 was produced in a number of Commodore factories around the world, so not seeing the original label, we have no idea what factory... It could be rare, or not at all...and just another VIC...

Unearthing a thread after one year and bumping it just a few days later for sure has its merits ...

All I can assume is that VIC-20 was SO RARE, he sold it and made millions. He's so rich, he got sidetracked and never got back to this thread :D

I own 3 VIC20s with serial numbers around 10k, PAL, PET style keyboard, in none of them the case serial number matches the board serial number. I don't know if they have been repared or something, they come from eBay, but I 'm suspicious if it's like that for all VICs.
