Super Monza Grand Prix

Post by Orac »

Hi, I have finally finished my second VIC-20 game.

ss2.png

I've only tested it in VICE but if anybody tries it on real hardware and has any issues then I'll hopefully be able to fix it. It should work on NTSC but will run a bit faster. As it's a race game then I didn't think anybody would mind. :)

A download link and direct download attachment is in the announcements thread. Enjoy!

Haven't seen anything this impressive since the Pole Position era!
I can't try it either in VICE or on the real iron, please someone post videos

Also, thank you for the Monza inspired circuit 🙏

Thanks for linking the video Beamrider. :)

No worries Orion70. Monza has always been a favourite track of mine. The game is not as smooth as Pole Position but I tried to make up for it by making it as fast as I could.

Looks very nice indeed! 👍
It's more colorful than PP, and some graphical details are better defined. Good idea to put some white pixels on the circuit, to improve the 3D feeling. I also like the sound of it. I particularly like the fact that other cars are difficult to pass, because they seem to drive much at the same speed of your car. This is more realistic compared to PP.

It's a pity that there's no map of the Monza circuit anywhere on the screen, not even in the title (but a small box in a corner with a top view and positions of the cars marked as small dots would have been best).

Also, why no white or yellow lines at the borders of the circuit?

Just saying eh, the game is wonderful :D

Thanks Orion70 for your kind words! :)

Yes, a map would have been ideal. Would have certainly been possible on the title screen. In-game would have been much harder for me to get working. In either case I was fast running out of memory and didn't really want to extend beyond a 16K expansion.

Road stripes down the sides of the track would have been great but it was just too difficult to do. :(

I have always loved racing games and there are so few that are in 3D on the VIC-20. This is certainly a very nice example! You should not let yourself limit by the +16K expansion-limit. Nowadays most serious users will have +32K or +35K. Of course I understand the "historical" challenge of a +16K. But if you believe the game could be better, don't shy away from using more memoy.

For example: Have you tried using a larger screen resolution on PAL? With the large car-size, things get quite cramped on the road, but maybe that is intentional.

Looking forward for OutRun/Daytona/Mario Kart next

Thank chysn!

Thanks Tokra. Yes, the cramped feel was deliberate. I wanted to make the game more about using judgement and skill to pass cars rather than just zooming past them. That was the idea at least. There's certainly plent of scope for somebody to make a better racing game game using more RAM. I'm not sure we'll get versions of OutRun/Dayton or Mario Kart though! :D
