Denial

I decided for this Xmas, the last on my channel, I would play loads of VIC20 games. I had a VIC20 only for 3 months, the PSU failed and the shop had no more in stock so offered us a full refund AND if we spent that refund on a C64 (80 quid more I think) they would let us keep the datasette (45 quid I think) and that was it. Thought it would be nice to plough through the TOSEC etc and ended up playing about 15-20 hours worth of VIC20 games.

What I found odd, and what separated the VIC from other more popular budget options of 1983, was the lack of anything like International Soccer/Kick-off on the C64. Is there really no scrolling arcade style footy game for the VIC20 at all? Nothing in directory after directory of screenshots stuck out.

(as I said in my other post I am closing my channel this year so this is not a plug for it....in fact I would say don't go there because there is a lot of swearing on some of my videos!)

Not only Football games - there is a distinct lack of sports games as a whole on the Vic. There are a few type-ins but almost no commercial ones. I always dreamt of Track & Field for the Vic but Villain (cop chasing robber) was the closest I got.

Vic does not even have a decent top-down, 360 degrees control, racing games - neither scrolling, nor single screen ones. It's easy to imagine the excellent Omega Race modified into a racing game.

The static screen homebrew port of Hat Trick is as close to football you get

Yeah, that's really a thing I noticed too. Because I only had the VIC for 3 months before getting a C64 I initially noticed that decent footy games like Realsports Soccer I had on VCS back then didn't exist. Later I noticed more modern type 8bit sports games that were nothing like PONG console 'sports games' etc missing and guessed this was a more modern invention. Commodore had an excellent in house football, tennis and basketball game for the C64 but they never tried anything like that on the sacrificial VIC20.

Thanks to arcade conversions being popular on the VIC it got things like into the screen racing games or shmups like Pole Position or Buck Rogers because they existed in the arcades but 8bit sports games on home computers most of us remember were a much later thing even in the arcades too I guess. If the machine wasn't cancelled by Commodore they probably would have existed but it does give the VIC20 game library quite a unique feel.

The only other thing I really missed was something as nice as VCS Star Raiders. Hell, I actually found an awesome Lunar Rescue and Gauntlet style game in my journey so far

Not too bad considering they are for unexpanded Vic (1k games ) , imagine these games with 32k or 32K+3K...
