What can prevent upper/lower case mode?

After probing the motherboard for signals, I found out the VA11 issue at the character ROM was caused by the original single leaf socket that the ROM came bundled with.

I changed the socket and no longer have the issue. No bodgewire required.

Now I'm tempted to replace the other sockets as well...
