OK, so that's quite old

https://www.c64-wiki.com/wiki/sd2iec_(firmware)#History

but only one release before the version I'm using. There is newer firmware from last year available from https://www.sd2iec.de/ (the file named sd2iec-current-binaries.zip), but I'm unsure if it wise to try it.

It sounds from the freeze during $ that the file system is corrupt, you are ejecting the SD cleanly, right? If you run CHKDSK (or whatever it's called these days) on Windows does it report any errors?

Please excuse the delay, unfortunately I've had again problems of dizziness/vertigo and had to abruptly quit whatever not strictly necessary for a while.

I agree that in general, by reading the user's manual about firmware update, it's a sort of automatic process from which it seems you can't go back, which is never a good/safe thing in my opinion. I fear ending up with an FE3 even less usable than it is now. Which is the general opinion about this point? Anyone who has updated its FE3 to the latest firmware available and swears about the goodness of it?

Yes I take care of corrcetly releasing the SD card each time, although I believe it's not even strictly necessary anymore. I will try to launch chkdsk "just in case", but I'm quite confident that the problem is once again not there.

I updated the main firmware of the FE3, I had problems with loading certain files which went away with a new version. Your problems sound more likely to be with the SD2IEC which has completely separate firmware.

Could you take a copy of a 'broken' SD card with something like Rufus and I will see if it works on my system?
