Top 5 favorite computers
I figured it would be cool to create a thread that poses the question "What are your top 5 favorite computers?"
I can go ahead and answer with mine (in no particular order):
Commodore VIC-20
Commodore 64C
Commodore 128
Commodore SX-64
Commodore 8296D
Bonus question:
What computer would you like to see?
My answer: Portable VIC-20

Yes, sorry if that was not clear, also after my original post, I noticed I forgot my non 8 bit Commodore favorites (Amiga 1200, Apple //e, Macintosh Classic II, and IBM PC XT).Boray wrote:I guess you mean retro computers...

Re: Top 5 favorite computers
I know my top is the VIC-20 because I find it more flexible for simple electronics experiments than the C64 or the PC or any other computer but this thread forces me to look back on all the computers I have owned and used since 1981.
What a strange feeling; I have put my fingers on the keyboards of so so many different machines.
I first saw and briefly used a VIC-20 in 1981, learned BASIC programming in 1982 in a CoCo2, got my first PC-4 in late 1982 then finally got my own VIC-20 on november 25th 1983. I then got a C64 in the summer of 1985, the REU in 1987 and the list goes on and on...
1989 Amiga 1000
1990 Amiga 500
1992 Amiga 3000
1994 486DX2-66
1995 486DX4-100
1996 Pentium 100-133
1997 Pentium Pro
1998 Pentium II 266-400
1999 Pentium III 500
2000 Upgrade (same machine)to PIII-850MHz
2002 Athlon XP 1600
2004 Athlon XP 2400
2006 Pentium D 2.8GHz - still owned and upgraded to 3GB with Radeon HD 4650
2011 Laptop Intel COREi7/4GB RAM - still owned
2012 Upgrade to 8GB
I have 2 VIC-20s here (and a PAL VIC-20 MoBo) both of which I got after 2000. The older one is the same age as the one I 1st saw in December 1981 in my aunt's basement- it is soon going to turn 35. Wow! thirty-five years old! - Still works like new...
I sell stuff for people who use 35 years old computers. Sounds weird doesn't it?
P.S.: I also own half a dozen C64 computers including one which is PAL and a C128.
Added edit:
My top 5 within the 20 y.o. or more ones would be:
1. VIC-20 (specifically with PET style keyboard)
2. Amiga 3000 desktop
3. C64
4. C128
5. PC with 486DX4-100 running WIndows NT 3.51 - it was amazing compared to other things available before Windows 95 and it was the first computer/OS I used to navigate the internet.

Retro, as in 20 or more years ago for me, in preferred order:
- A3000T
- Linux 2.0
- C128D
- C16
- VIC20
Any technology distinguishable from magic is insufficiently advanced.

I'll bite...
In no particular order, they are:
C= VIC-20
C=64
Apple IIe (enhanced)
Atari 800XL
TI-99/4a
I love all retro computers to one degree or another, both those are my top 5.

Re: Top 5 favorite computers
Not exactly retro, but my favourite computer would probably be my 12 year old HP Pavillion laptop. It was bought new in 2004 for £900 and it's been with me through everything.
I no longer use it for the internet, but it's still my go-to home theatre machine and emulators still look and sound great.
Here's a review of this beauty from back in the day:

Interesting... the Macintosh or one of its numerous variants is not on anyone's top 5 list.

Re: Top 5 favorite computers
Maybe it's too mainstream for a snob niche of users like us . How many people would know what the heck is a Plus 4 nowadays? Nonetheless, it appears in several lists...
