Exploring this a bit more (and assuming we can get the Vic to talk at 9600 baud)....
The CFG pin on the device has to be held low in order to configure the IP address. Would it be possible to connect a transistor to one of the data output pins on the Vic user port (say PB5) and the other two legs connected to CFG and GRND of the device in order to switch the into configure mode under software control?
I have just received a starter electronics kit so probably have the parts to try this by following an aproach as outline below..

Alright, I know. This thread is ancient. But I recently picked up one of these for about $10 off eBay, played around with it enough to make it work from the VIC-20, and wrote it up a bit with some information on usage. Not sure if anyone is playing with these, but maybe it'll help others who go googling for information:
