Best data storage?

Post by R'zo »

I am getting ready to order the parts that I need to make the chords for my Vic. I am very excited. I am planning on doing alot of programming with it and will need some form of data storage to save my programs. I have a tape drive but I plan on using the Vic for live music and the tape drive will be to slow on the load time for live performance.

I want to know your opinions are on the varying forms of data storage. Between the disks drives, FE3, and the different sd card readers. What works the best? What are the upsides and downfalls of each device.

This
http://www.thefuturewas8bit.com/shop/co ... iec-c.html

plus this
http://www.boray.se/commodore/vicmenu.html

Upsides:
* Huge storage space
* Fast and easy
* Easy to share programs between modern computer and Vic. Just plug the SD card into the PC and copy files just as PC files.
* Support for .D64 files too.
* Works with C64, C128, Plus/4 and C16 as well.
* Support for many turbos including JiffyDos and Final Cartridge 3 (C64)

Downside:
* Not low-level compatible with a real 1541 disk drive = some custom disk loaders won`t work, but this mostly affects C64 stuff.

I made a poll today in a facebook group. SD2IEC was the most popular device with 37% of the votes. Followed by 1541 Ultimate 2 with 23%. (1541 Ultimate 2 is not for the Vic-20 though).

disk drive: compatible, but small storage and floppies are rare and not cheap nowadays (anyway compatibility problem is more related to C64 than VIC20)

SD2IEC: great

FE3: even greater ! the ultimate weapon for programmers! (a SD2IEC device with any memory configuration a 512K expansion and 512K flash memory)
but you have to do it yourself, order the kit and assemble it.

Thanks for the input. I'm thinking about going for a sd2iec for now and a fe3 down the road. Is the fe3 site back up yet. Last time I was there it was still down?

Actually, there are some FE3 kits available : http://www.sinchai.de/index.php?main_pa ... 6c28bb569b

If you want .TAP support with your SD2IEC, have a look at the C64SD Princess : http://www.manosoft.it/
