Can I put a 1540 ROM into a 1541?

Post by Schema »

While looking into speeding up my VIC disk menu program, I found about the 1540/1541 debacle (summarized here) and the UI- command.

So I'm wondering, can I download the 1540 ROM, burn it to an EPROM and then use it in a 1541 drive? Would this effectively turn it into a 1540? Of course this would be dedicated for use on the VIC20.

I don't know how much the speed improvement really is, but it would be a fun project. The Cincinatti Commodore Computer Club has several VIC-1541s for sale, so I thought I'd use one of those.

If the page you refered to is correct, then it would be no problem....

From the page: "The better-known 1541 was mechanically and electronically identical to the 1540 but had a revised ROM that permitted it to work with the C64 by slowing the drive down slightly."

If mechanically possible, it would be even funnier to build a 1540-II. Good luck anyway. Myself, I now have all (?) the parts required to build a X*1541 cable, but haven't got to do it yet.

What I might do is put a double-sized EPROM in, with both the 1540 and 1541 ROMs. Then I could have a little switch so I can switch between 1540 and 1541 modes, for the rare times I would need to use a C64 with the drive.

I'd just send UJ+ or whatever to the 1541, and instant 1540.

I can put the VIC 1540 ROM in my 1541-II

I have 62K of ram in my 1541-II so I can load ROM code in it and switch the real ROM out.

I have the old VIC-1540 rom. There is only a little code change. It works with the VIC good. It works in the 128 good on the 80 screen but not on the 40 screen or in 64 mod. But you can get it to work if you trun off the VIC in 64 mod.
