Yes, to filter the +5V that goes to one end of the pots.

Code: Select all

            100
     7 ---\/\/\/--+------ 7
                   | +
FROM ----- TO
 VIC 470uF ----- PADDLE
                   |
     8 -----------+------ 8
Note that the resistor is 100 ohms not 100k. This should give a 3dB point of somewhere around 22Hz. Use a low ESR electrolytic or add a 100nF caramic in parallel.

This shouldn't make a lot of difference if any to the pot range.

But this is a motherboard modify or it could be an external modify to plug on the joy port ?

I prefer an external solution with a male-female joy plug without any internal modification.

Wow! I've been away for a couple of days and had the worst 'net access. I've been able to read the posts but not respond but, boy, it's good to see some development!

Of course, an external solution would be the best but at the very least it would be great to finally pinpoint the problem so there's a better understanding of the fault. :)

Well done Ian for changing out the caps - that was way more brave than I would've been! I presume after your experiment I shouldn't bother buying the caps from Maplin then?

Pedro,

Don't bother with the caps I mentioned previously.

Please get 8 off 470uF Electrolytic and 8 off 100nF ceramics and 8 off 100 ohm resistors. Also a 1 female 9 way D connector and 1 male 9 way D sub.

This will give me and you a set of caps to try on a paddle mod later this week and another set for an adaptor or two for any unmodified paddle set.

It will be easy for me to do this mod on an existing set of paddles in a reversible manner. I tried but with wrong cap sizes at the weekend.

The disadvantage of doing it on the paddle is that it needs 2x capacitors, 1 for each paddle. The advantage is that it will be invisible / no adaptor.

At this time it looks like no motherboard mod is required. More later this week.

Wow this is a very good news, maybe a first step for en external adaptor!

You only need one of each component as only the +5V line to the paddles needs to be filtered. The other lines should all pass through unmolested.

. . . jittery paddles -

Post by Commander#1 »

I find this rather interesting. I just read a blurb about 'jittery paddles' in the WIKI section - come here to find that that is
the lastest issue to be discussed, go back to WIKI to document it and all I get there is a screen full of crap! AARRRRGG!!
Can someone tell me what's going on around here!!

So you mean that we can build an external interface with a 100nF caramic in parallel on joy pin 7 and a bridge with the 470uF between Pin7 and 8

Code: Select all

_________________
\ o5 o4 o3 o2 o1/
 \ o9 o8 o7 o6 /
  \___________/

Pin Joystick

1 Forward
2 Back
3 Left
4 Right
5 -
6 Button 1
7 +5V *
8 GND
9 -

Code: Select all

<-- Male connector to the Vic
-- --
1|---UP--------------------------------------|1
2|---DOWN------------------------------------|2
3|---LEFT------------------------------------|3
4|---RIGHT-----------------------------------|4
5| /--------------------\ |5
6|---FIRE-/ /---100nF------\ \---------|6
7|---+5V---/ |+ \--------------|7
8|---GND-\ 470uF /--------------|8
9| \ -| / |9
-- \------------/ --

Female connector to the Paddle -->

Is this right ?

That is the idea, but a 100 ohm resistor on line 7, not a cap.

ah ok so this is the correct diagram, right ?

Code: Select all

<-- Male connector to the Vic

1|---UP--------------------------------------|1
2|---DOWN------------------------------------|2
3|---LEFT------------------------------------|3
4|---RIGHT-----------------------------------|4
5| /--------------------\ |5
6|---FIRE-/ /--100ohm-------\ \---------|6
7|---+5V---/ |+ \--------------|7
8|---GND-\ 470uF /--------------|8
9| \ -| / |9
-- \------------/ --

Yeah, I'll go to Maplin with my shopping list tomorrow. I was going to go today but the weather is just ridiculously bad!

As pins 5 and 9 are the POTY and POTX pins it would probably be best to connect them straight through as well. 8^)=
