I'd bet everyone got older in the previous year.
In the end it will be as if nothing ever happened.

Bother - not quite old enough for a Sage

Post by TarkaTOtter »

Bother I am officially OLD 41-45
Its a bit scary being 1 of 3 in the not quite an Old Sage catagory - I guess that puts me in the Old Duffer catagory. I thought there would be a few more in the 41-45 catagory

What are all you youngsters doing with Vics

Yep. I have a little trick. I just look at the date of the poll and adjust the answers accordingly in my mind.

34 y.o. here - 1982, 10 y.o. - father buys unexpanded vic20 - after about 2 weeks of learning how to enter and save programs onto the cassette drive the program rocket command is entered from the vic manual - joy ensues and a life long passion for video games is born. - ahhh the memories

The age distriubution in the polls is about what I would expect.

I'm 25, so the VIC was dead by the time I was old enough to sit at a computer. The first computer I ever played with was my uncle's TRS-80 model 4 (luggable version) when I was probably 4 or 5.

I begged and begged and begged and my dad got me my first computer when I was 9. I don't remember the exact specs, but 33mhz and 16mbs of RAM was probably pretty standard around then.

My computer NOW sports 4gbs of RAM, a dual-core 64 bit Athlon, and about 1.5tb of hard drive space. This 3.5kb of RAM thing on my newly acquired VIC is a total mindjob.

Still waiting for the video cable to come in the mail, though!

I got my first VIC-20 in 1981-2 and bought a second one from a newspaper ad so I would have a spare.

I was a professional programmer at the time. See

if you are interested.

My most forward-thinking project was to connect the VIC-20 to the IBM mainframe to try to convince management that intelligent terminals could do a much better job than the dumb terminals we used on government projects. Management slept through that. Doesn't matter, the chip-revolution brought cheap computing to everyone and mainframes are seldom heard of now.

The poll results are much as I would have expected. Those of us who were in to the 8 bit computers as kids are still into the VIC 20 today.

I wonder if there will ever be a young generation taking an interest in classic computing, much like there is an interest in classic cars, especially amoung some younger men.

Okay, I confess. I'm a ways over 45...52, in fact. The only PET I ever saw was on a rerun of the "Buck Rogers" TV show, which they were attempting to pass off as a 25th-century computer. I bought my VIC secondhand in 1983, I think. Been through a VIC, three C-64s (there's one in my office--I had to transfer old text files over to the PC there), and a C-128, which as far as I know is still in use, a half mile from my house.

I am still shocked by the modern 'pornography of memory,' where 3.5K barely makes an .INI file in Windows, and VIC folks could cram a lot of fun into that same space.

So, yes, I am one of the Old Ones here. But not necessarily wise ;-)

"Pornography of memory"

An excellent way of putting it, and it reflects my attitude as well.
