Future of the VideoGame Industry.

Post by Jeff-20 »

The videogame industry has made obvious advances (2-D to 3-D) and less predictible experiments (Power Gloves and Dual Screens).

Let's all make predictions for the videogame world. If your prediction comes true, I'll mail you a sandwich.

Mine:

1. online gaming will combine worlds. For example, the universe of one online game will be used with engines from various games.

2. retro gaming and aging gamers will help boost the return of some retired companies. Sega will attempt to reenter the hardware market much like Atari tried with Jaguar in the 90s.

3. backward compatibility will become more and more important, and by result, the hardware industry will hurt itself as people don't feel pressured to get the "latest thing". Software companies will be far more profitable.

I have more... Which do you think are possible? What probability? And what are your predictions?

More predictions:

4. In game advertising will vastly increase as gaming becomes more popular. Actual commercial breaks or pop-ups will appear at loading intervals especially for online games.

5. You will actually be able to BUY things in online games. I mean, you will have PAY PAL to buy options within the game, during the game. Imagine the commercial opportunities of offering hints during a fustrating moment in a puzzle game. :!:

This may be intergrated into gameplay. YOu might be able to buy weapons, additional lives, levels, etc. with a registered credit card already typed-in before the game. A young gamer may not realize how much is being spent. The same psychology used in coin-op arcade games will keep players spending.

This is already happening, kind of, with Everquest and Star Wars Galaxies. You can buy/sell items within the game on eBay, using Paypal. It's frowned upon, but it does happen.

i have often wondered about the future of online sports leagues.

will there be betting on these games someday?

what about having the 'atheletes' within these leagues be unique data files, and people actually trade 'players' etc...

would real money be used to trade players?

i can't wait to see what online sports leagues will be like in 10 years time

I think there will be new versions of classical movies where you can exchange the actors for other ones if you like. For example Star Wars with Greta Garbo as the princess ;) And there will also be interactive parts of the movies, for example - you can controll Luke Skywalker in the lightsaber fights in the movies if you feel like it. There will also be movies with completely made up characters. Like Toy story, but for real. Actors will be out of a job, but the rights to well known actors will be very valuable. For example - A movie company can contract an actor to use his "parameters" in numerous of different films. Some people with good looks can just sell their looks. And instead of plastic suregry, they can just make some adjustments in the parameters. Others can sell their voice, etc etc... I won't speculate how the porn industry will use all this... ;)

The Microsoft Vic 20

Post by Tonks »

I predict that Microsoft will produce a 100% accurate Vic 20 emulator and release it with every game known to exist - every cart and tape. I will be able to fire up my Xbox and upgrade it to a Vic 20.

More fun than fiddling around with VICE or other emulators I can never get working correctly.

Heh. Microsoft (or Bill himself) probably has the money to buy all the rights, but would they have the energy to go find everyone? Although M$ is known for stealing ideas, concepts and half programs since before, I don't think they would manage to copy it all.
