Vic20 user guide manual

Post by Falkon215 »

I never noticed that there was a non spiral bound copy of the original user guide Manual for the Vic20?Was this later in the Vic20 production? Only seen spiral bound versions.

Given that I (still) had spiral-bound manuals with the C116 and C128 I got in 1985 and 1986, respectively - i.e. after production end of the VIC-20 - I would place my bet on a modern reproduction.

You should be able to tell by the sharpness of the diagrams and drawings. Unless they have been scanned with a very high dpi (>=600) they are bound to appear less sharp than in the original manual - unlike text, which easily can be 'reconstructed' in an optimal way by OCR.

Sorry, I completely missed this post. I have a non spiral bound French manual, which happens to be published by the mysterious Procep editor we talked about elsewhere. It's very peculiar because it's printed horizontally. See pictures.
As a sidenote, I've noticed only now that Procep was the exclusive distributor for Commodore in France. Clearly, it also printed stuff for the French market.

See Orion70's French manual, which seems to have been published for the France French market, made me think that in all my VIC-20 collecting time spent here in Canada I've never come across a French (Canada) manual. The cartridge games from Commodore Canada all came with bilingual instruction manuals (or a French language insert), so I wonder what the arrangement here was for the actual user manual?

I wonder if there was none, a French Canadian localized version, or if they made this France French version available here as a pack-in for the Quebec market or an after market purchase.

I guess in English speaking Canada VIC-20s were sold with the US manual, and in Quebec with the French one. I found this page about the peculiar Canadian box, and two pictures show it was sold with the US manual inside (different editions, too):

Yes, I've seen that box in Canada (sleeve box) and also the older corrugated hinged lid box.
However I think there was a specific Canadian box too, as I remember one with the Calgary Olympics logo on it (I'd have to check my collection). It might have been the C64 box though - can't remember.
