Hi there,
THEC64 Winter Gamedev compo has just elapsed (https://retrogames.biz/thec64-winter-ga ... ompetition) , it was a gamedev compo for C64 and VIC20 sponsored by THEC64 team . The games will be available for download soon.
The number of entries submitted just for the VIC20 is impressive : 7 out of 9 !, and the compo was short!!! just lasting 2 months.
That really demonstrates there are still a lot of alive and motivated VIC20 developers who want to compete !!!
So why not setting up a VIC20 only gamedev compo ? that would take place periodically ?
Of course that's just an idea but as a VIC20 game dev I would want to compete as I did with THEC64 Winter Compo (I submitted 2 entries). It was very exciting to compete on VIC20 and to finish my entries in time.
Wouldn't an annual "VIC20 Denial gamedev compo" be great ???
There are periodic gamedev compos on most retro platforms (C64,Amstrad,ZX Spectrum,Amiga...).
It would bring even more visibility to the VIC20, new people would be attracted to join the community and we'll have a lot of new homebrew quality games to play.
What do you think ?

Great idea, I've loved taking part and was a joy to start seeing others here were getting involved. Might need a little break though - I'm exhausted, will have to temper my ambitions for the next time, making unique levels took a lot more work than I expected So an annual event sounds perfect.

Yeah, I'm in!
It would be cool if the competition had divisions based on memory, like Unexpanded, +8K, +16K and over. Or something. But I'll chime in with unexpanded games no matter what.
The time constraint was a motivating factor for this one. I thought of ways to improve my game after submission, but it was "done," so that was that.

I had the same idea. Would anyone be opposed to using Itch.io? Having it listed among the game jams there might pull more developers into it.

Re: Annual VIC20 gamedev compo ?
I'm not sure categories would be really needed, there won't be hundreds of entries
Judges would vote appreciating the quality of the game and its requirements.
Using itch.io would be a good idea!
Maybe the compo could be sponsored by some VIC20 software publishers ? like Thefuturewas8bit or DoubleSidedGames or Psytronik.

As a user/player only(for now...) I would love to see this.
It makes me very happy to see so much dev still being done on this platform. Very happy i picked one up.
