A New Competition - preliminary discussion
A New Competition - preliminary discussion
I have had a brief conversation with Jeff and would like to setup a competition to run from July 1 to November 30.
Before I announce it I would like to gather thoughts in this thread on what makes a successful competition.
It will be for Vic20 only for Denial community.
First Prize will be over £100 GBP / $140 value. Other prizes to be determined.
What do folks think about a small entry fee to put some initial skin in the game and raise some funds for a charity?
What else is important to get plenty of entries?

Re: A New Competition - preliminary discussion
That sounds like fun, and I'll probably have time for a VIC-20 project in July!
And I'm happy to pay an entrance fee, especially for a good cause.
When it comes to subject matter, expansion requirements (if any), etc., I'll likely participate no matter what. I wouldn't mind seeing a space for non-game entries although--to be fair--you'll get more entries if you focus on games. That's kind of the VIC-20's traditional market. But I think it would be unfortunate to just have a game competition, because there's already plenty of space for that.

Thanks Chysn.
I am working on some criteria to make it interesting.
Non game was one of them
I look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with.

Re: A New Competition - preliminary discussion
What is this a competition for exactly? You don't say.
I assumed it's a programming competition, because most VIC-20 / C64 competitions are.
But then I thought about the possibility of art/music done with already programmed VIC-20 applications, so I thought I'd better ask.
There's also the possibility of creative writing about the VIC-20...i.e. an article for public consumption.
Other creative non-traditional uses of a VIC-20 (i.e. electronics interfacing, best/funniest photo of a VIC-20 in an unusual setting, and other unexpected creative uses).

Would love to enter but don't have time with RL so busy right now. IMHO prizes are not necessary, as this is for Denial kudos, but I get it. Pay to enter could be a barrier for getting entries.
Re: A New Competition - preliminary discussion
Good idea. It could also be about demos, ones with unusual graphics and sound effects, in my opinion there are too few for our brave MHz ace machine

I was thinking games only initially but then considered other thins that would benefit the community more.
e.g. New piece of hardware (I love some of the USB gear I recently bought) or an Application or Utility.
I had not go to Demos or Artwork so these are great additions.
I might have to construct it a bit like our Agriculturual shows over here. Best cake, Best Honey, Best jam, 4 identical onions etc.
