New Commodore website, new Commodore machine

Post by ral-clan »

Well, the Commodore name has been bandied about so much lately - I don't even know if this is a "legitimate trademark owner" webiste or just an unoffical site. Commodore International (maker's of Gravel media players) went bankrupt sometime about two years ago it seems....now we've got this:

http://www.commodoreusa.citymax.com/index.html

They are re-badging an all-in-one keyboard/PC. Which actually isn't a terrible idea considering it looks a little like the VIC/C64 breadbin type machines.

This website seems a little amateurish - which makes me suspect it might be a hoax/joke.

Yeah, this one.

It makes me sick to say it but I think it's real. If you look in the "Contact Us" section you'll find someone named "Barry S. Altman" whose email address will lead you to Homecraft which appears to be a home-run business that imports furniture from China. I think he's the guy with the bright idea to slap the Commodore name on the Zero-FootPrint-PC.

Another sad chapter in the Commodore story. :(

Does that contradict information on this thread?

If it's real, then why isn't there a commodore logo somewhere on the actual machine...

Probably because he hasn't actually had them re-badged yet in China and is using an old product photo to generate publicity.

Whoah, this website: http://www.commodorecorp.com/theCompany.html
in online again. It looks similar to the one the Dutch owners ran a few years ago, but now it's based in Asia and is producing those Commodore branded laptops.....and you can even get Commodore brand LCD TVs!

Just knockoff re-labelled stuff - yes it's sad. I suppose at least it keeps the brand active in the slim hope someone will slap it on something innovative one day.

I particularly like the credit card reader mounted on the side.

It's interesting that the new computer is offered in Ubuntu, Windows, or the option of Mac OS.

Hmm, Mac OS.... Amiga OS in the future?

Is there anything particularly wrong with this machine other than knocking-off the brand name?

I don't really think so. At least it vaguely resembles an old breadbin C64, so it's kind of neat to have a Commodore logo on it.

I just wish it would come with something unique to Commodore - like a built in emulation package - a copy of C64 Forever - or even if it had a beige case with brown keys and the rainbow logo.

Because otherwise, there's not much to make it distinctly "Commodore". Lets face it. At this point people would only buy Commodore over something else for the retro attachment - and this machine doesn't do much of that right now (other than the breadbin look). They could exploit the retro thing sooo much more. At least Commodore Gaming made a few C-skins for their PCs that featured the old C64 biege and brown.

Hmm, if this guy can license the logo and such, I wonder how much it would cost for me to do it :-)

You may need to start importing furniture.
