You would have to download the source code and edit the texts in there. I haven't looked at how the interface texts are handled in the source but I would guess that they're stored in separate source files so it shouldn't be too difficult. At least one person from the VICE team is a Denial member, Ma...

Sounds like a tip that should be in the "ROM calls" sticky thread.

The easiest and cheapest way is to get a new VIC 20. Individual chips are sometimes sold on eBay and such places but they are usually more expensive than a complete working VIC 20. Go figure.

Re: Black screen :-(

I had a Vic that worked until it fell off a shelf that collapsed, everything seems fine, not even any scratches on the case, opened it up, fuse ok, all chips reseated, no loose wires but on power up, black screen, tried with a cart in, no difference, any ideas where to start looking? Probably a sma...

There are no 6560 chips in a 1541, only a 6502 and a couple of 6522 VIAs (when it comes to MOS chips anyway).

It will probably be much cheaper to buy a couple of new VIC20s. Individual chips are usually much more expensive than complete computers.

Slightly OT: Care to say which old synths and drum machines you picked up? I love that old stuff; brings me back to my teenage years just as much as the old Commodore machines.

I don't think you can damage the Datasette by using a long tape. AFAIK the reason for recommending not to use tapes with long playing time was that they were more likely to break due to being made of thinner plastic, plus they may be more prone to data loss.

Re: Upgrade a VIC 20 to a C64, possible via expansion slot?

Was there anything the other way round? Mind you, if you had an apple II, why would you want a C64? ;) For the much better graphics and far superior sound perhaps? :) Granted, the Apple II had all those internal expansion slots and (from the IIe onwards) an 80-column screen, but when it came to the...

Good work!

Why not send the PDFs over to DLH so he can add them to his Commodore documnets archive? He'll be happy to host them, I'm sure. Imo it's better to have all documents in one place.

So it compiles standard VIC 20 BASIC to tiny 6502 assembler programs? As opposed to being a compiler for Tiny BASIC?

There's no program like this on the VIC as far as I know, but it certainly is doable. It would need to have have slightly lower resolution and, most importantly, a skilled programmer would need to have the time and interest to do it.

As always, if you have a scanner and the time to do it, please scan the manual and send it to DLH over at bombjack.org. His archive has become the place to go for books, manuals, and magazines relating to Commodore computers.
