I resized to 88x160, redrew eyes and moved nose/mouth up 5 pixels, then resized to 264x160.

I couldn't resist a stab at the eyes. (Using 2 color for the face.)
I think to match the original a little better you need a much more oval face.
Obviously the neck line is too heavy in my image.

Every demo (and especially every part of every demo) is different, and reading the source won't help much I don't think (unless you spend waaaay too long analyzing it).
