Re: Component Video

There's an external RF modulator which provides a video signal to contemporary TV sets that only feature a TV tuner for input. The un-modulated composite video signal isn't ideal either, quality-wise, but there exist several variants of a S-Video mod that provides a separate Luma and Chroma signal ...

Re: The Vic-20 launching Oct 2020

We're planning a trip to Ireland next summer, COVID permitting, so I'll try to score one there. But there's 60% of me that's like, "Just buy another CR VIC-20, for heaven's sake." I think you should listen to that 60%. If you take away all the hype, TheVIC-20 is just an emulator. It's a n...

Just got 1274 on Beast of Eden

This is the highest score I've ever got on this game and I felt it was worth sharing. In the spirit of trying to make the forum more active, I thought I'd start a high score contest akin to a kickabout in the local park where you just put down a couple of jumpers for goal posts and figure out the re...

Re: RetroTink and the VIC-20

I've mentioned this before but I think the acid test for a modern display is how it fares in game with something like Galaga - black background with red or blue colours. Are you seeing the blue/red clearly or are you struggling? A lot of people see the boot-up screen and think "Oh, wonderful!&...

Qix

Anyone here love this game as much as I do? I play this a lot on the Atari Lynx, original Gameboy, original arcade version through the PS2 Taito compilation and on the Amiga. One thing I wonder is whether it's actually possible to cover 100% of the screen. I've got 97, 98 even 99% and split Qix befo...

Re: Joystick for macOS and VICE

I have one of these: https://www.retronicdesign.com/en/ It's an adaptor that allows you to use a 9-pin joystick in a USB port. I've used it on Linux Mint and Ubuntu, Windows XP and with the Raspberry Pi and the description says it's compatible with Mac. It works with pretty much every 9-pin I've tri...

Re: VIC Game Club No. 1 – Qix Inspired Games

I'm sure the tune got on my parents's nerves, but my brain didn't (and doesn't) work that way. i found it hypnotic and kinda addictive in itself. Also, an in-game tune on the Vic was a rare treat, doubly so as it was polyphonic. I sure savored it, so you certainly didn´t write that bassline in vain...

Re: The Amiga Thread

The one thing I disliked the most about the Amiga was the difficulty in understanding the hardware. I never did get very accomplished at coding on it, whereas I was pretty good on my C64. The hardware on the Amiga is a lot more complex. (That's actually one of the reasons that I think I'm going to ...

Hey folks!to Sorry for the necro-bump, but I just came across this site last night and wanted to contribute briefly. I'm Cliff Ramshaw, the author of Shark Attack. I was thrilled to see some of you were playing it (relatively) recently, and even more thrilled that some of you seemed to enjoy it. Ma...

Re: The Amiga Thread

Who needs an Amiga? Here's a boing ball in basic on a 6502 based beeb. Very nice piece of coding there. Thanks for sharing. One of the main problems both Commodore and Atari had back in 1985 was that both systems were technologies in se...

Re: The Amiga Thread

I grew up with the ST and found that one a lot easier to bring into the 21st century thanks to the ROM based desktop and convenient FAT32 support. A 4MB STe will give you access to everything there is to do on an Atari ST while an Amiga 1200 needs 8MB RAM for WHDLoad games because half the memory i...

srowe wrote: Tue Aug 04, 2020 1:33 pm The two different models of the VIC have motherboards of differing sizes, it wouldn't be simple to design a case that fitted both of them.
Even if they were only able to support the cost-reduced model VIC it would still be something.

Re: WTB: VIC-20 case and/or keyboard

I totally agree. The breadbin case is so iconic to the C64 (even though the VIC-20 had it first!) that it surprises me no one has replicated it. Logically, I don't see any reason why you couldn't use a C64 breadbin case for the VIC if you cut a bit of extra plastic out for the cartridge slot (every...
