Interesting... I prefer some features of the original, mainly the eyes. While they are less defined, they are more natural looking.

Apple II didn't have cell colors.
It hardly had colors at all - the color was based on a pixel pattern.

If you did decide to use it, you should probably fix the trace break coming off the third connector pad (in the upper image)

Andy Finkel at Commodore did the VIC-20 programming.
I just poked around the Adventureland cartridge contents and there's no text compression, so there's plenty of room for optimization, but it probably wasn't worth it because it wouldn't have been easy to squeeze into an 8k cart anyway
