Re: Not quite... The end of the ROM based PLA for the 64
I concur that the ones pictured are fakes. The indention denoting pin 1 being the wrong size as eslapion points out. Other giveaways are the two round indentations, as well as the pin 1 indention should have a smooth texture. The laser etching is wrong - wrong fonts and locations. They re-mark chips...

Re: C64 PLA surrogate: the BIGal
Nice, I have seen these types before. They seem to work much better than an EPROM. On a side note, in the ebay listing you state: ATTENZIONE: se si sceglie la spedizione in posta prioritaria: il compratore si assume ogni responsabilità della spedizione, quindi accetta in realtà di comprare come se r...

Interesting, I have two drives with this problem. If they could be repaired inexpensively that would be cool.

Re: About the forum soul
Sorry to see you go...But I think you should reconsider. You may or may not know that I have had disagreements with some on this forum, and I have found that the best way to deal with is just make your case and let it stand on it's own. Some people have their own opinions and that doesn't mean that ...

Rn1 is a resistor ladder used to pull up the lines, I used a 4.7K but other values will work too.mamejay wrote:Yes I have seen this one. On the schematic can you tell me what RN1 is? I suspect its a resistor ladder. Just need to know the value if it.

Re: How to deal with flexible PCBs?
The reason I mentioned the pen is because some years back when I received it, I fixed a couple Sinclair ZX-81 keyboard ribbons with it. I just drew over the existing traces and then encapsulated it in Scotch brand cellophane tape front and back. They still work fine to this day.

Re: How to deal with flexible PCBs?
Silver ball point pen. I bought this one because it comes with a great silver pen plus I found it locally. A little expensive but the pen has a high silver content with very low resistance in the drawn traces. Just be sure to really shake it well before use. I actually tap it on a hard surface to ge...

Cool,
Someone will have to give it a shot and let us know about the build quality.
Myself, I hate waiting a month for stuff from Hong Kong/China.

Re: Vic 20 video issues. Help troubleshooting
Unfortunately the prime suspect in these cases is the VIC chip. They are hard to come by and expensive. Not saying for sure it is, but it's a good possibility. The fact that you can hear sound is a good sign since the VIC chip also does the sound.

Re: Microsoft stops activating windows XP
That's what I did, I "ghosted" it to another drive - that's it. The thing is: I paid for everything. Microsoft has no right to invalidate my installation. I have the authentication sticker on my PC. If they are going to shut down activation for XP completely, they should release a patch to...

Microsoft stops activating windows XP
I "retro" game on many platforms and I recently discovered after a hard drive replacement that I cannot activate Windows XP! I thought microsoft stated that they would allow it to be activated for "it's useful life" then remove activation completely via a patch. It looks like Mic...

Re: Weird mod on underside of board
How's the picture output? Is is clear? Do the colors bleed much? A guess would be that someone attempted to improve the video quality because the CR (cost reduced) VIC-20 (the one you have) is known for having a lesser picture quality than the earlier VIC-20 design because it uses a simpler less acc...

Re: Cartridges Do Not Work
I use a thin paint scraper (spackle applier) with thin bed sheet thickness fabric over it to clean the cart port. Place a piece of the fabric over the end of the scraper and apply at least 91% isopropyl alcohol (too much water in 70%) and insert and remove repetitively making sure to get all the con...
