Freenets on 300 BPS modem
Back in the 1997-98 I didn't have a PC (which was funny because I worked as a techie for an ISP to provide support for Windows 95/98/3.1 and Macintosh). So I used my Commodore 64 and a 300bps modem to connect to my local freenet (National Capital Freenet in Ottawa, http://www.ncf.ca). It was quite f...

O.k. I DEMAND to see this pitfall! Even a screenshot. Just the thought is amazing to me. I love cross-platform stuff! I am excited to hear someone has tried this. I'll have to upload it to a PC with my StarCommander cable. But it will take some time to do this, as I need a computer that has Windows...

Joystick port problem
A problem has recently surfaced wtih my VIC-20... it appears that in some games, the player will start moving right by itself, with or without pushing the joystick to the right, and it even happens if there is no joystick plugged in! I understand that the VIC-20 is almost 25 years old now and that s...

I just submitted my Ultima-style fantasy RPG game "Realms of Quest II" to the minigame competition.

My first VIC-20 and other memories
I got my first VIC-20 computer in 1982 (I was 9 years old) after winning it in a Pepsi contest in Northern Ontario. For the contest, you had to collect bottle caps that spelled V I C 2 0, the letter that was hard to find was the "C" (Commodore logo) and I found it because my grandmother ow...

This is a brand new game that I started to work on a few weeks ago (albeit, based on other boxing games that I've done previously). Here's a brief history of boxing games that I've made for Commodore computers: 1996 Feature Bout Boxing - Commodore 64 (you can find it by searching Google) 1998 Ringsi...

My unexpanded VIC-20 game for the 2004 Minigame Compo
Yesterday, I submitted a game called "Vicside Boxing" for the 4K category. It's a boxing simulation game for the unexapnded VIC. You can pit fighters from boxing history such as Rocky Marciano VS Mike Tyson. There's only 5 fighters in the database, but you can create your own fighters and ...

Thanks for the tip! I just tried POKE 36869,248 and I saw that the character 32 (space) wasn't affected--that's great for when you need to clear the screen. This would probably work best under a multi-loading game situation where you can use 37 characters for a VIC with a disk drive and 12 character...

Hi Jeff, I remember your newsletter from 8 years ago! I did send you a few programs on a disk, but then my landlady kicked me out and I had to move.... so I never got more than 1 issue. I assume that you must have sent it to my old address. I did get issue #2 (or a photocopy of it) from Ward Shrake ...

POKE 36869,255 (Unexpanded VIC-20)
One of the most useful POKE commands for the unexpanded VIC-20 is POKE 36869,255. By modifying this pointer of the VIC chip you are telling it to replace the screen POKE characters 0-63 with the data contained between 7168 to 7679. And even if you modify letters of the alphabet, you can still displa...
