There was a sealed box of Verbatum 5.25's at Goodwill today, thrift store for those who don't know, unfortunately they were HD's so I left them. I did pick up a hole puncher though so I can notch the other disks and format them.

How did you do that, did you just solder in a toggle switch somewhere?

Yeah, HD's usually appear a little blacker and darker whereas DD have more of a brownish tint to them, in my opinion.

Generally I think the way to tell is if it has a reinforcing ring on the center hole, no reinforcing ring = HD. These all had rings, there were some that had no ring so I left them, and the ones I have done so far have formatted fine. I think you just might have just gave away your age by that state...

Cool I well just get a hole puncher and do that. Also can I notch both sides and write to the other side, I believe the 1541 is only a single sided drive, as these are double sided disks, has anyone tried this before?

Floppy notching

I found some more 5.25" floppies for my VIC today, got about 20 for $2. They were from old software, one set was of Borland Turbo Pascal. The problem lays in that about half don't have notches, they are copy protected, so I need to notch them somehow so I can format and use them. I have tried l...

I ended up not using the dip switch, I instead used a mini spdt slide switch to select between pins 1 and 4 on the cart and it works very well. I just have the slide switch poking out the open slot in the back of the cart so it is not very noticeable either.

I was doing some thinking and searching on the forum, might the reason the games are not running properly be because I am using a 16k expansion cart instead of an 8k? I assumed that a a 16k would be good for both. I was reading that you could take and wire dip switches, or just a single toggle to se...

Questions about my 1541 drive

I have tried searching but I cannot seem to find an answer. I got my 1541 disk drive today and it works pretty good, I plugged it into my desktop, only one with a parallel port, with a XM1541 cable that I made and was able to format and write four disks with no real headaches. The 4 disks I made wer...
