Well, back in the early 80s at my elementary school (I was in grade 6 I think) people with VIC-20s would often swap bags of games on cassette for the weekend. You would borrow someones games, copy all the ones you wanted, and then return the originals on Monday. I traded games with a guy who was a b...

Thanks! I just tried it and it worked a treat. I tried it too and it worked the same for me. My VIC looked the same as yours before and now it looks bright and "normal". I'm using a 1701 monitor too, but I wonder, why are you plugging the video (or is that the audio) into the front of the...

Heh, how funny. I also recently acquired a huge black "SPECIAL CARTRIDGE" by Audio computers, but the card inside only has one switch. If you look closely, do the holes for the four switches look like hand made? 10 DIP switches sounds like an odd number, maybe it is 2*4 to configure each ...

Thanks very much! You've done the VIC community a great service (an I appreciate it too!).

Hm, so you have a manual. What were we going to do with the ROM dump, other than archive it in case someone can build a compatible board? We were trying to find which pointers or calls it patches, but that was only to find which area of memory it was worth dumping. Well, I would still like to dump ...

hi; yep i have the same type of card as you, from data20 and with their opening screen. chris Thanks for offering a scan of the manual. That would be very helpful! I suppose you could post a link here, or e-mail it to me privately at the e-mail address I supplied to you in the PM. Looking forward t...

I have a couple monster third-party memory expanders as well. Only problem is they all have a mass of DIP switches and I don't have the manual. I have one in a huge black case with four switches labelled "SPECIAL CARTRIDGE" by AUDIO COMPUTERS and by playing around with it I've managed to g...

Never ever do this with dry steel wool, if you must use steel wool use the type with detergent and use it wet. Okay thanks for the tip. I wonder....the Mr. Clean "Magic Eraser" (at type of sponge with built in cleaning solution), seems to do wonders for the plastic cases of old computers....

Alan, what is the serial number of your VIC? Serial number 525005 Also, there's a decal on the side of the case, above the joystick port declaring that the VIC has not passed FCC testing and that (basically) if the neighbors complain about interference from the VIC it's your responsibility to fix i...

Yeah, I actually have far more stuff (gigabytes more) offline I was preparing for CafeVIC than was ever posted online.

Hi have all the necessary X-1541 and Datasette to PC cables necessary if you find you are having trouble transferring that ROM chip. Or I could do it from my DATA-20 40/80 column board, although I'm not sure it is the same board you have. When I do a RUNSTOP/RESTORE the board displays the message: D...

Hi, I too have a DATA-20 40/80 column cart (I'm located in Cornwall, Ontario - near you!). I think I was discussing this with you in another thread. Anyway, when I turned it on it totally brought me back to those 40 column PET computers I used to play around with in elementary school! (I had a PET a...

Good news! I got both my slot expanders working. The above message was posted by me (ral-clan) but I guess that I forgot to log in and it got posted as a "guest". Anyway, I wanted to add: with the steel wool or rubber/pen eraser, use gently and only when the alchohol or vinyl eraser won't...

If you're wondering what Gamebase20 is, then reference the online community for Gamebase64. It's a project to archive all games for the C64, of which I'm also part of. But I'm doing GB20, the Vic20 version, on my tod at the moment after sterling early work by other people here. I might get the firs...
